Learning in Retirement hailed by national Elderhostel group
Bolton Lunceford, president of the Washington-Wilkes Chapter, says that EIN followed the Washington Wilkes Chapter activities through reports from LIR Inc., and solicited application for membership. After local agreement, forms were completed and following a few months of consideration by EIN, approval came in September. The Washington-Wilkes organization is the only such organization which is located apart from a college or university campus; thus, its affiliate status with LIR Inc. of Athens is also unique. Local membership in EIN means that Washington-Wilkes Chapter information can be easily located and reviewed by any of the millions of Elderhostel members throughout the world. Institute activities are established on every continent and in all major countries. Likewise, local members can access program descriptions of all other chapters throughout the world. Institutes for Learning in Retirement began almost simultaneously in New York, New Hampshire, and North Carolina in the 1970s, soon reaching the west coast and Canada. Subsequently, they took the Elderhostel name; specifically, the Elderhostel Institute Network (EIN). Although loosely connected, a central office is now located in Boston. Approval for the Washington- Wilkes Chapter, formally organized in 1998, came from EIN Headquarters in September. Basic chapter data can be found on the internet at www.elderhostel.org/ein/intro.asp Such chapters as the Washington- Wilkes one are widely sought by professional and other retirees when selecting retirement sites. LIR Inc. (Athens) has often been cited in popular and professional publications as a benefit to those choosing Athens. The Washington-Wilkes Chapter is one of eight LIR organizations in Georgia.
In addition to President Lunceford, other officers are Joe Harris, vice-president; Peggy Barnett, secretary; and Oliver Myers, treasurer.
