Whistling and singing
By GARY TOOLE
Whatever happened to whistling and singing

while folks worked.

You don't see or hear that much now. I guess we've become so stressed out that we've lost the song in our hearts or nowadays folks would probably think you're off your rocker, when in fact, whistling and singing will eliminate stress.

Years ago most folks would be singing or whistling while they worked while they sowed and cooked. Of course most women stayed away from the whistling because of the old saying, "a whistling woman and a crowing hen always come to no good end."

I'll never forget that Alton Wommack would work like a horse and whistle and sing as he went. He kept a song in his heart and he made others feel good. Like the old hymn, "He was spreading cheer everywhere to the sad and the 'lone."

A few years back when I was making a delivery for our family business I felt good in my soul. I was singing and whistling as I rode along and when I made my first stop I was still singing and whistling when I walked into this place of business.

Right off the bat the owner said the most unusual thing I had ever heard in my life. She said, "We don't allow whistling in this store." I quickly said, "Lady, I'm whistling amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I'm not giving wolf calls."

She very snidely repeated, "No whistling!" I realized that she was just a God-hater who didn't want to hear any Christian songs. So, I said, "Okay," and walked out the door singing "I'll Fly Away!"

And to that I say, "Amen and amen and amen!"
