Bulldogs no match for Tigers; Patriots are next
By JOHN LOVVORN

DEMONT GRESHAM BREAKS FREE FOR A TD RUN This one was called back but the senior led the defense in tackles.
Last Friday night, the Washington- Wilkes Tigers defeated region rivals Morgan County by a score of 28-0. The Tiger defense recorded their second shutout of the season, the first being against Lincoln County. The WW offense scored four touchdowns on the night, giving it a three game streak of scoring four or more touchdowns, and a total of four games overall. This win moved the Tigers to 5-1 on the season, and 3-0 in region play.

Washington-Wilkes kicked off to start the game. A personal foul call against the Tigers on the kickoff put Morgan County on the 50-yard line to start their opening drive. The W-W defense forced the Bulldogs to go three-and-out, giving up only one yard. A 49-yard punt into the end zone gave the Tigers the ball on their 20- yard line. Washington also went threeand out, punting the ball down to the Morgan County 32-yard line. The Tiger defense forced another three-andout, this time giving up eight yards. A 54-yard punt put Washington on their six-yard line.

THE TIGER DEFENSE RECORDED ITS SECOND SHUTOUT OF THE SEASON LAST FRIDAY. This weekend, W-W hits the road for a region matchup with the Oglethorpe County Patriots.
The Tigers' second drive of the game can be summed up in two words - Kelmetrius Wylie. On third down, after moving the ball out to the W-W 15-yard line with his first two carries of the drive, Wylie took the handoff and ran over, around, and through the Bulldog defense for 85 yards and the touchdown. Mark Tench came on to kick the PAT, putting the Tigers up 7- 0 with 5:46 left in the first quarter.

After returning the kickoff to its 30- yard line, Morgan County again went three-and-out. Gary Wilburn fielded the 47-yard punt and took it back 26 yards before stepping out of bounds. Washington went three-and-out, downing Clete Wilson's 44-yard punt on the Morgan County nine-yard line. The Tiger defense forced the Bulldogs to go three-and-out for the fourth time in as many drives, giving up a combined total of 11 yards. Washington got the ball on the Morgan 42-yard line after the punt. A 10-yard pass from Wilson to Jareon Small and a short gain by Wylie ended the first quarter.

"YOU'RE NOT GETTING PAST ME, BUDDY!" That Bulldog didn't have a chance against big Tyrece Ashmore.
An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Bulldogs on the first play of the second quarter gave the Tigers a first down on the Morgan County 22-yard line. However, a holding call on W-W would cause the drive to fail, with Tench attempting a 42- yard field goal. The kick fell short, giving the Bulldogs the ball on their 20-yard line.

A 25-yard pass on third down gave Morgan its first first down of the game on their 47-yard line. The Tiger defense tightened up, with defensive end Deronn Walton causing and recovering a fumble on fourth down. Washington went three-and-out again, with Wilson punting the ball out-of-bounds and into the Tiger cheerleaders down on the Morgan 25-yard line. The Bulldogs started driving again, with a 24- yard pass and a 14-yard pass moving Morgan down to the Washington- Wilkes 35-yard line. Cornerback Wilburn saved the Tigers' shut-out by intercepting a Bulldog pass on the WW four-yard line.

Fullback Demont Gresham gave the Tigers some breathing room with a 16- yard run on first down out to the WW 20-yard line. A personal foul by Morgan County at the end of the run put the Tigers on their 35-yard line. After two short gains by Wylie, Gresham took the hand-off and out-ran the Bulldog defense for 54-yards and a touchdown. Unfortunately, a clip on W-W brought the touchdown back to the Morgan County 36-yard line. After a Wylie run and another personal foul call on the Bulldogs, Wilson found Small for 20-yards and a touchdown. Tench made the PAT, giving the Tigers a 14 point lead with just a minute left before the half. Morgan ran two plays after the kickoff and went to the locker room, trailing the Washington 14-0.

Washington-Wilkes started the second half with the ball on their 20-yard line. Seven gives to Wylie in-a-row put the Tigers on the Morgan County 40- yard line. But a holding call against W-W caused the drive to stall, with Wilson punting the ball down to the Bulldogs 16-yard line. A 25-yard pass on first down put Morgan on their 41- yard line. On the next play, the Tigers jumped offsides for the first time all year, giving the Bulldogs first-andfive on the 46-yard line. This wasn't enough to help Morgan County's drive, however, as the W-W defense forced them to punt just three plays later.

Washington got the ball on their 27- yard line. Gains by Wylie and Gresham gave W-W a first down. After two rushes by Small, Wilson hooked up with tight end Khiry Tutt for 22- yards and another Tiger first down. The drive ended two plays later with a Wylie fumble giving Morgan the ball on its 33-yard line. Morgan ran two plays before the end of the quarter, the first getting called back by a holding penalty on the Bulldogs and the second gaining six yards to their 24-yard line.

Two incomplete passes and a punt by Morgan County started the fourth quarter. The punt rolled out-of-bounds at the Washington 49-yard line. Wylie moved the ball down to the Bulldogs' 38-yard line on two carries. Small got the ball on first down and worked a little magic of his own, going all 38- yards for the touchdown. Tench was good again, making the score 21-0 with 10:27 left in the game.

A 24-yard kickoff return and a fiveyard facemask call against the Tigers put Morgan on their 44-yard line to start their next drive. After gaining a first down on the Washington-Wilkes 40-yard line, the Bulldogs attempted a long pass over the middle of the field. Wylie, playing safety, made a miraculous, one-handed interception and returned the ball to the Washington 39-yard line before being tackled. Wylie gained 10-yards on first down, putting the Tigers on their 49-yard line. Two plays later, a perfect pass by Wilson was caught by Small and taken the rest of the 51-yards for the final Tiger touchdown of the game. Tench finished four-for-four, giving Washington a 28 point lead with 7:14 left in the contest. Morgan started its final drive on its 26-yard line.

With small chunks of yardage the Bulldogs were able to get to their 45- yard line before the Tiger defense shut them down. The W-W offense took over right there. After short yardage gains by Drew Wilson, Small, and Clete Wilson gave the Tigers a first down, they knelt out the clock, finishing out their third region win of the season.

The Washington-Wilkes offense gained a total of 394 yards on the night, 291 rushing and 103 passing. Wylie led the W-W ground attack with 28 carries for 183 yards and a touchdown. Gresham was next with three carries for 51 yards, having a 54-yard touchdown run called back. Small had five carries for 48 yards and a touchdown, as well as three catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Tutt also had a catch for 22 yards. The Tiger defense was led by linebacker Gresham with 10 tackles, one of which was a tackle-for-loss. Wilburn played well in the secondary with a tackle, two assists, three broken-up passes, and an interception. Defensive linemen Patrell Turman, Ryan Cutler, Cedric Quinn, and Deronn Walton all had outstanding performances up front. Tench had another perfect night with four PATs.

This Friday night the Tigers travel to Oglethorpe County for another region game. The Patriots' offense uses a spread offense similar to Lincoln County. They have two half backs with good speed, and will try to get them the ball on the outside. Oglethorpe's defense bases out of a 4-4 look. Kickoff is at 7:30 in Lexington.
