The Office Cat
Trevin Burriss and Todd Lewis have established a new cleaning service business. It's called TNT Quality Services, LLC. Trevin and Todd will be welcomed to the business community at the City Hall Annex Monday, October 30, at 6 p.m. We're all invited. Trevin was formerly employed by Hexcel and Todd is the former manager of Farmer's Furniture.
Remember that Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, October 29, in the wee hours of the morning. That's the day we get back the hour we lost when the time changed in the Springtime. Set your clocks back an hour before you go to bed Saturday night and enjoy that extra hour of sleep. The change means that daylight beginning at 6 a.m. will be like 7 a.m. now, and we early morning walkers won't have to walk in the dark. . . . But there's a price we have to pay for that hour. Darkness will arrive about 5:45 p.m., or so, and pretty soon the curtain will fall shortly after 5 p.m. . . . Fire Chief Alan Poss reminds us to change the batteries in our smoke alarms when we change our clocks.
Chef Ben LeGette is in the process of moving into his home on Pope Street in Tignall and has plans for, among other things, a business of gourmet frozen meals. Ben is Charlie and Sandi's son. A recent power outage in the county was found to be caused by a huge - I mean really huge - fire ant bed. It was big, deep, and compact and quite a job to destroy..
Dateline on CBS television last week featured the murders of our Dolly Hearn, and Jennifer Corbin, by Barton Corbin, friend of Dolly 16 years ago, and husband of Jennifer, 2004. It was a tastefully done documentary. Dolly's brothers, Gil Hearn and Carlton Hearn Jr., were interviewed on the program.
The little magnolia tree on the north end of The Square has several blooms and lots of buds on it. I'm afraid that if the temperature is down in the low 30s tomorrow morning as predicted, they will all be killed.
The Sanders Family Christmas, next scheduled performance of the Washington Little Theater Company, has been postponed due to "technical difficulties."
Last weekend, Jeff and Bonnie Dees, former residents of Washington Wilkes now living in North Carolina, were in Atlanta to attend a birthday party for a friend. The conversation led to Jeff and Bonnie having lived in Washington-Wilkes and one of the guests said, "Oh, do you know Steve and Eleanor Blackmon?" The woman was a cousin of Eleanor. Zombies in Resthaven Cemetery? In a movie? I don't think so!
Former Washington-Wilkes standout Casey Nickels continues to draw attention with his play as a freshman at the University of Georgia. The walk-on invitee was named Scout Team Player of the Week recently in recognition of his consistently aggressive performance. People who know him fully expect Casey to earn playing time with the Varsity Georgia Bulldogs. He is the son of Troy and Becki Nickels of Tignall.
Frank Spradlin has bought Main Street Paint on West Robert Toombs Avenue (Downtown) from Henry Harris and plans to expand services. Frank has been a renovations expert for more than 20 years and has many restoration projects in Wilkes and surrounding counties to his credit. He will continue with his renovation/restoration business in addition to the hometown paint store.
The First United Methodist Church Sunday Dinner and Auction was a big success and a lot of fun. First Baptist folks didn't get out of church until almost 1:00 so we missed a part of the auction. But what we did see was interesting and fun - and the turkey dinner was delicious and the service great. The dinner and auction $12,800 for the fellowship hall building fund and the church received approval to go ahead with the building project Monday.
Rosemary Hopkins' designer dinner plates featuring Washington- Wilkes historic scenes are beginning to arrive from England. She will be displaying them soon in elegant settings at the Rider House. There are 16 plates in all, all designed by Rosemary.
Saturday morning, the Lions Club will have its chicken barbecue; and the Woman's Club will have its big yard sale. . . . First Baptist will have its third annual Trunks of Treats on The Square Sunday evening, 6-8 p.m.
Tuesday is Halloween. Batten down the hatches!
The Washington Little Theater Co. has been given many costumes from Disney World in Orlando, Fla.! Jean Payne received a call from her cousin, Hubert Kennedy, who lives in Thomson telling her about the costumes. His son works at Disney World and had told his dad that they were giving away some costumes that they no longer planned to use but which were in good condition. Hubert called Jean and Jean called Jo Randall who accepted on behalf of the Washington theater. Jean and her daughter,
Debbie Cofer, made the trip to Disney to get the costumes and returned with a back seat and trunk full of costumes. . . . So we'll probably be seeing some of them on the stage. There are not any Mickeys, Minnies, Donalds, Plutos, or major characters, but all the costumes are interesting.
