Scarborough memorial dedication set for Friday at 10 a.m. on Square In a solemn ceremony, family, friends, and neighbors will gather to dedicate a memorial to Marine Lance Corporal Michael Philip Scarborough at the Wilkes County Court House on Friday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. The dedication is set for the Marine Corps 231st birthday, organizer Michael Horgan said, and comes soon after the second anniversary of LCpl. Scarborough's combat death in Iraq. The memorial has been carved from Oglethorpe County blue gran- ite. The poem, "Freedom," by Dr. David T. Kirk is being engraved on the memorial. Event co-chairmen Blake Thompson, Horgan, and Marine First Sergeant Albert Diaz will speak briefly at the unveiling of the memorial. A contingent of Marines from the Marine detachment at Ft. Gordon, many of whom took part in Scarborough's funeral, will attend. Members of the Washington-Wilkes High School band will perform the Marine Corps Hymn.
The public is invited.
