Young leaders help to host Ga. Black Mayors meeting

Members of the ORBIT Leadership and Abstinence Youth Council were involved in the 2006 Black Mayors Conference held at the Fitzpatrick Hotel October 19-20.

The students served as greeters, assisted with registration, and on Friday morning they welcomed the delegates and gave a briefing on the purpose and goals of Youth Leadership in Wilkes County. "Involving young people in civic activities allows them to meet new friends, develop new interests, improve leadership skills, and increase self-esteem," says Dorothy Jordan, coordinator of the program.

Jordan said that the young people pledge to use their skills and con-

nections to play a central role in creating the solution to stopping school dropout; decreasing the percentage of students who are using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; delaying the onset of sexual activities; increasing the percentage of students that are physically active; and increasing the percentage of students who are eating nutritious meals.

"If we listen to young people, engage them, and encourage meaningful youth involvement, we will develop a unit of committed, knowledgeable and skilled young people capable of providing self-motivated leadership in their schools and in their communities as they mature into adulthood," Jordan said.
