Buddy and Alice Lindsey get reunion with family members
A cousin, Bill Blanchard, whom they had not seen since 1958, and his son, Chris Blanchard, whom they had never seen, were en route to Fort Bragg, N.C., to see Bill's daughter and son-in-law who are stationed there. Bill Blanchard is the son of William Eugene Blanchard who lost his life aboard the USS Oklahoma when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Eugene Blanchard and Wesley Echols of Wilkes County were the first two casualties of World War II and the present Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5899 is named for them - the Blanchard-Echols Post. While the visitors were here, with Buddy they visited the VFW Post Home to see the picture of their father and grandfather and the memorials to him there. They also visited his grandparents' homeplace in Tignall, and Independence United Methodist Church Cemetery where many of his relatives are buried. They visited the Fitzpatrick Hotel on The Square and saw many of the old homes in Washington. Buddy says that Bill and Chris thought Washington was a beautiful town and were impressed with the Southern hospitality they received. It was an exciting and emotional day for Buddy and his cousins. "It was a real joy to see Bill again," Buddy said, "and of course to see Chris for the fist time."
The cousins plan to see each other more often in the future.
