Vets to be honored at celebration On November 11, 2006, there will be a seven county celebration for veterans of all wars entitled "Thanks For Our Freedom - Veterans' Appreciation Day." Veterans from each war will present facts about the war in which they participated. The event will be held in Winterville at Pittard Park. The program will start at 11 a.m. with the presentation of colors by a color guard from the Navy Supply Corps School. John Berry will sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America." The program will continue with the veterans' presentations, followed by the introduction of the featured speaker by the mayor of Winterville, Jim Mercer.
The speaker for the celebration will be Tom Carter, a former Marine, who served and was wounded in the Vietnam War. He will speak about his combat experiences and how he feels they relate to the freedoms people enjoy today in America. Following Carter's remarks will be a catered lunch for the veterans.
