Betty Slaton and Marion Slaton were hosts for a group of 38 visitors to Washington-Wilkes last Thursday and Friday. They were from Mary Our Queen Catholic Church in Norcross and were guests at the Fitzpatrick Hotel. On a recent Saturday, Lisa Pickrell of Warrenton visited The

Fountain Spa and Salon in Downtown Washington for a massage. She told The Fountain staff that she was amazed that a small town like Washington had such a nice facility. She also said that she and a friend had recently visited the spa at the Ritz Carlton on Lake Oconee, but she was more impressed with how much nicer the overall décor, atmosphere, and service was in Washington-Wilkes.

An elderly Washington-Wilkes gentleman got tired of reading the paper while waiting for his wife to tour Georgia Square Mall in Athens. He decided that he would just do some people watching. After a while he began to count the number of women who were wearing skirts or dresses as opposed to pants or jeans. By the time his wife came back to the designated meeting place he had counted only two ladies with skirts on, and one of them was his wife. Sorry, sir. That's just the way it is today.

The Washington-Wilkes Tigers won over the Greene County Tigers Friday night in Greensboro and will be playing Fanning County (Blue Ridge) for the region championship Friday night in Tiger Stadium. It's a funtime as well as an opportunity to brighten the day for friends.

Ed Durham and Ryan Hite are the new owners of Colonial Builders Supplies located at 106 Campbell Street (near the Wilkes County Stockyard).

I didn't know that it has been 10 years since David and Janie Cravens came to Washington-Wilkes and opened McDonald's until I read that they are having a tenth year reunion of all former employees Saturday in the area behind the restaurant. Employees who opened with them in November, 1996, will receive special recognition.

For several years, Mercer and India Harris have been going to the American Cancer Society Hope Ball in Savannah. Mercer makes pictures of people attending the ball and provides prints of them for the Cancer Society which sells them and the proceeds go to the Society. At this year's ball a couple of weeks ago, Dr. Jeff Boyd, who is involved with cancer research in New York, inquired about the photographer. When he was told he was from Washington, he said, "I wonder if he knows Eleanor and Steve Blackmon." Of course, Mercer knew the Blackmons and was a classmate of their youngest son,

Jeffrey, in Washington-Wilkes. Dr. Boyd, who is Eleanor's nephew, and Mercer talked extensively at the ball. After going their separate ways after the ball, Dr. Boyd called Eleanor and Steve from the Atlanta Airport and told them he would be in Washington-Wilkes for Thanks giving dinner with them and to make him an appointment with Mercer for a family portrait on Friday morning.

When First Baptist had its annual stewardship dinner and program Sunday night, members of the

First Methodist Youth Group were babysitters for the babies and younger children at The Ark and in the church nursery. They had dinner, too. . . . More than 200 First Baptist members and guests attended the dinner and program.
