Christmas Tour of Homes to include 9-10 homes

The Christmas Tour of Homes sponsored by the Washington Historical Foundation will be held in Washington Wilkes on Friday and Saturday, December 8 and 9.

The tour will include four homes and the First United Methodist Church on the Candlelight Tour from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m., and five

and a possible sixth one) on the Town and Country Tour on Saturday. While visiting the Methodist Church visitors will be treated to beautiful piano and organ Christmas music.

The annual Christmas Dinner served in beautiful Washington- Wilkes Homes will be served on Saturday night and will be preceded by a Twilight Champagne Reception at The Livery on West Court Street.

Homes on the Candlelight Tour will include Pembroke, home of William and Genna Pope, built in 1825; the Methodist parsonage; the home of Martha Coulter on Water Street, and an early 1900s cottage on Grove Street, home of Robert Geiger and Ed Franklin.

Houses in Washington-Wilkes on the Day Tour will be HydeAway, built in 1840 and beautifully restored. It is now the home of Lawrence Hyde. The Rider House, built in 1865 in the historic Downtown district and restored in the 1990s by Smythe and Jane Newsome, is the other town house on the Day Tour.

Country homes will be Pine Heart in Tignall, built in 1898, and restored in 1999 by Hugh and Nobie Keener; Goose Pond Cottage, chartered in 1785 by the Daughters of the Colonists; Holly Ridge Country Inn, home of Roger and Vivian Walker; and the old Danburg Post Office which the Walkers have restored and use as a guest cottage at their home.

There are many other attractions available during the weekend. The Livery will host a program by group of violins and a cello to play while visitors view original artwork and talk with artists.

Cook-off winner Joe Barnett will have his famous Shrimp and Grits available at The Livery from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Another attraction will be the Holice McAvoy Museum which features the most significant World War II planes, all hand-carved by Mr. McAvoy. Nearby at the Kettle Creek Battlefield, a storyteller will be on the site to tell about the battle at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Washington Historical Museum and the Washington Historical Foundation will present the Daniel Bibb Russian Icon Collection at the museum from November 16 through January 31.

Tour Headquarters will be at the Fitzpatrick Hotel on The Square.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the lovely shops, restaurants, and museums of historic Washington-Wilkes.
