Tigers squeak by Callaway, will host round 2
Callaway got the ball on its 34- yard line to start the game. The Cavaliers quickly moved down the field, scoring in just five plays. The PAT made it 7-0 Callaway with 9:28 left in the first quarter. This was only the third time the Tigers had been behind all year, and only the second time trailing by a touchdown or more. Demont Gresham fielded the ensuing kickoff and returned it 20 yards to the Washington 25-yard line before fumbling. The Cavaliers recovered on the W-W 17-yard line. Callaway scored two plays later, going up 14-0 less than a minute after its first touchdown. Gresham received the kickoff and returned it 22 yards to the Washington 37-yard line. Two runs by Wylie gave W-W a first down in Callaway territory, but then a deep pass by Clete Wilson was intercepted on the Cavaliers' 13-yard line. The Tiger defense finally settled down, forcing Callaway to punt from its 26- yard line.
After a short gain by Wylie to start the quarter, Gresham made a great catch on a 25-yard Wilson pass down at the Cavaliers' 15-yard line. Two runs by Wylie put the Tigers in the end zone, with Mark Tench's PAT tying the game at 14 points apiece. Three plays after the following kickoff, Quarica Smith caused a fumble and Gresham recovered it on the Callaway 18-yard line. The Cavalier defense held strong, but on fourth down Tench made a 30-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 17-14 lead with 6:55 left in the half.
The second half of play started with an exchange of punts. Callaway received Wilson's punt and ran it back to the Washington 37-yard line. The Cavaliers scored in just four plays but missed the PAT, going up 20-17 with 5:55 left in the third quarter. After the kickoff the Tigers started on their 20-yard line. Receiver Gary Wilburn caught a pass out at the 34-yard line, and then Wylie got the toss and went 66 yards to put Washington back on top. The Cavaliers started the fourth quarter with a 21-yard run out to midfield. A 29-yard pass on thirdand 15 kept the drive alive and put Callaway on the W-W 26-yard line. The Cavaliers continued to drive down the field and finally scored from three yards out with 4:46 left in the game. The PAT was again no good giving the Cavaliers only a all smiles as he trots into the end zone giving the Tigers the lead over a surprising three point lead. Germell Moore received the kickoff for the Tigers and returned it to the W-W 36-yard line. Runs by Wylie and two passes from Wilson, one to Wilburn and one to Larry Davis, put the Tigers on the Callaway 29-yard line. Wylie and Wilburn then combined efforts for the number one play of the entire season. Wylie took the toss and started to run with it to draw in the Cavalier corners. Once the corners took the fake, Wylie dropped back and heaved a pass to a wide-open Wilburn. Wilburn caught the pass and took two steps into the end zone, scoring to put the Tigers ahead 30- 26 with just 1:03 left in the game. Callaway almost turned the tide on the ensuing kickoff, returning it 61 yards before Dywane Hampton knocked the returner out of bounds at the Washington 25-yard line. The Tiger defense defended its lead, dropping the Cavalier quarterback for a loss on first down. Then Trey McCants made the catch of the year. As Callaway's quarterback was running from the Tiger defenders he aimed a pass for a Cavalier receiver on the 15-yard line. The pass never got there, as McCants picked the ball off at the 23-yard line with a little over 30 seconds left in the game. Wilson took a knee three times to finish off the win, advancing Washington-Wilkes to the next round of the playoffs. The Washington offense put up 370 yards, 218 on the ground and 152 yards in the air. Wylie accounted for 267 of the yards: 231 rushing, seven receiving, and 29 passing. He had three rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown. Wilburn was the leading receiver with four catches for 50 yards, including the game winning touchdown reception. Wilson was eight-for-13 passing for 153 yards. The Tiger defense was led by Hampton with seven tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and six assists. Next was Gresham with nine tackles, three assists, and a fumble recovery, and then Moore with six tackles, two sacks, two tackles-forloss, and five assists.
This Friday night the Tigers host the Spartans of Greater Atlanta Christian for round two of the AA State Playoffs. GAC is lead by a Lee Chapple, a Division-1 prospect at quarterback, and offensive lineman T-Bob Hebert, who has committed to LSU. They also have two Division 1 prospect receivers and another Division-1 lineman. They are a balanced offense out of the I-formation. Defensively, the Spartans base out of a 50 front, with Hebert as one of their defensive lineman. They also have outstanding speed at linebacker and corner. Kickoff is at 7:30 at Tiger Stadium. Moments later, after Callaway nearly broke the Tigers' kickoff and was threatening to score, Trey McCants sealed the victory with an interception deep in W-W territory with just seconds to go.
