Paramedic Jeff Hackney talks about career
By W-WMS SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS

Paramedic Jeff Hackney was a recent guest of Ms. Gloria Rhodes' Career Explorations sixth grade classes.

He gave a brief synopsis of his education, which followed graduating from W-WCHS and then DeKalb Community College in Atlanta. Part of his training involved an internship with a GM dealership, where he was a line mechanic. He worked his way up the ranks as a foreman and was classified as a master technician.

Mr. Hackney continues his work with the Washington Fire Department, which involves fire fighting and rescuing those involved in wrecks and rescues requiring a scuba diver. As a First Responder, Mr. Hackney became more interested in the medical field and attended Athens Tech to train as a paramedic. He has continued his studies and has been recognized regionally and state-wide for his competencies. Mr. Hackney delivers training to physicians on how best to deal with trauma victims. He has been awarded the prestigious Life Savior Award and feels that even though his work is very stressful, it is extremely rewarding.

Mr. Hackney delivered a Power Point presentation to help students better understand critical care rescues. The students were fascinated at the cost of the ground trucks and helicopters, not to mention his two thousand dollar helmet. Most of his rescues are out of Atlanta, but some are outside of Georgia, and include Nebraska, Philadelphia, Miami, Bahamas, and even Ecuador.
Students of Ms. Gloria Rhodes' Career Explorations classes listen attentively to Jeff Hackney's presentation on his career as a paramedic.
