Wilkes Co. 4-H team takes first place

4-H'ers who competed in the Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging Jamboree included (front row) Jessica Wright, Alyssa Stockwell, Emily McNure, Hayley Colvard, (back) Michael Edwards, Courtney Broome, Amanda Wood, Nick Reville, and Ty Owens.
The Wilkes County Junior Consumer Judging Team took first place in the Area 4-H cotton Boll and Consumer Jamboree and one of its members was the second high individual in the competition at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center earlier this month.

For their effort and knowledge the first place juniors received cotton canvas bags. They were competing against eight other teams from across the state. Emily McNure was the second-high scoring individual for the junior contest, out of 60 competitors.

Local 4-H'ers who competed included Michael Edwards, Courtney Broome, Amanda Wood, Nick Reville, Ty Owens, Jessica Wright, Alyssa Stockwell, Emily McNure, and Hayley Colvard. Michael Edwards and Ty Owens competed as individuals in the senior contest. All other participants were on the junior team.

The 4-H Cotton Boll and Consumer Jamboree activity featured two facets of competition. Senior 4- H'ers (grades 9 - 12) presented a two-minute speech on cotton. 4- H'ers in grades 5 - 8 prepared a poster to promote cotton and used the poster to present a thirty second cotton commercial. Each contestant also tested his clothing and consumer knowledge by ranking four classes of clothing, consumer goods, or services from "best to worst" for a particular buying situation. Items judged this year were: alarm clocks, jeans, internet shopping, and frozen pizzas.

"The 4-H'ers learned how to make knowledgeable, rational decisions when purchasing goods and services," said Marcie Simpson County Extension Agent. "They also learned the importance of cotton as an apparel fiber. As a result, 4-H'ers understand how to get the most for their dollar while acting as responsible consumer citizens," she added.

The 4-H Cotton Boll and Consumer Jamboree is sponsored by the Georgia Cotton Commission and the University of Georgia, College of Agricultural and Environmental Science, Cooperative Extension.
