SOUTHERN FRIED FOOTBALL
with CLAUDE CLEATS

Last weekend began the furious finish to the college football regular season. Hats off to Ohio State as the Buckeyes secure a spot in the National Championship game in January. Who their opponent will be is anyone's guess, but there are a couple of Southern teams with a good shot.

Let's take a look at this week's action:

Boston College over Miami by 6 - The Eagles of Boston College could be the best team in the ACC this year, but they may not get a chance to prove it. Miami has folded its tent in what may be Larry Coker's final season at the helm.

Arkansas over LSU by 2 - This is a must-win situation for the Razorbacks if they are to have a shot at playing in the National Title game. LSU was obviously looking ahead to Arkansas last Saturday night. It almost cost them dearly as they had to go to overtime to beat Ole Miss.

West Virginia over South Florida by 17 - The Mountaineers have an outside chance at the BCS Title Game. South Florida is a decent team but does not have enough weapons to beat West Virginia.

Tennessee over Kentucky by 8 - The Vols will have to play well and avoid turnovers because this Kentucky team is pretty darn good.

Upset: Wake Forest over Maryland by 6 - The odds makers say Maryland will beat the Deacons. 'Ole Claude thinks Wake will rebound from its disappointing showing against Virginia Tech last week.

Upset: East Carolina over N.C. State by 3 - The Pirates are probably going bowling. N.C. State may be going out to look for a new coach.

North Carolina over Duke by 4 - The Tar Heels keep the Blue Devils winless.

Florida over Florida State by 10 - The Gators are thinking National Championship. The Seminoles are just wondering what happened to them this year.

Ole Miss over Mississippi State by 3 - This game has little meaning outside of the State of Mississippi, but boy does it count here. The Rebels' home field advantage will be the only difference in this game.

Louisville over Pitt by 14 - The Cardinals are still hoping for a BCS bowl bid. Pitt has apparently collapsed.

Clemson over South Carolina by 6 - The Tigers have not played well lately. The Gamecocks have played well but still lost, except for last week's win over pushover Middle Tennessee. The game is in Death Valley and that should provide the edge that the Tigers need.

Virginia Tech over Virginia by 7 - Al Groh's Cavaliers are playing much better, but so is Virginia Tech. Hokie head man Frank Beamer is a very good "big game" coach.

Georgia Tech over Georgia by 3 - The Yellow Jackets storm into Athens and take the State Championship!
