Power in the Tongue I listened to her answering machine message which in addition to the usual "I'm not here; please leave a message" included a spiritual message. It was one that got my attention. It said, "There's power in the tongue. Speak blessings, not curses. Speak life, not death." I remember how in the book of James it speaks of the power of the tongue - the power of an unbridled tongue; one that can destroy lives and reputations; one that can leave emotional scars. It speaks of one that can destroy relationships, and can utter from the soul curses to man and God. It also speaks of one that can do the unforgivable sin of blaspheming the Holy Ghost. Yes, there's power in the tongue to destroy, but there's also power in the tongue to build up, to uplift and encourage, to lift someone's burden, to speak praises to God, to send forth blessings bestowed upon all those who hear. The late Rev. Norman Vincent Peale wrote a bestseller entitled "The Power of Positive Thinking." So it is, when we always speak negative thoughts it puts us in a realm of despair. We dwell on death rather than l ife eternal. In Philippians 4:8, the Bible states, "Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest. Whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Let us not speak slanderous gossip, nor backbiting with our tongues full of poisonous venom, but let us speak blessings, not curses, speak praises to the Lord, speak kindness to our neighbor and speak life, not death. Can you say amen? | |||||
