Wilkes turnout light in runoff vote

A grand total of 261 Wilkes County voters - some 4.42 percent of registered voters - turned out Tuesday to vote in the General Election Runoff that decided the one remaining statewide race.

Republican challenger Chuck Eaton upset incumbent Public Service Commissioner David L. Burgess, the only Democrat commissioner

remaining on the PSC. Statewide, Eaton outpolled Burgess by more than 10,000 votes.

Voters in Wilkes County gave the nod to Burgess by a margin of 15 votes. Burgess led statewide voting in the November election, but was unable to avoid a runoff with only 49 percent of the vote to Eaton's 46 percent.
