Tiger basketball team starts slow but expects to compete well in AA

Going into Tuesday night's game against Greenbrier at Evans, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers boys basketball team was still a little unsure of itself - understandably, the boys had had only five practices together since the end of football season when most of the players reported for the first time. And so, in the infancy of the 2006-2007 season, W-W is on the short end of a 1- 2 record.

However, Head Coach Don Keiser is quite optimistic about his team's chances for a playoff season in AA competition. In fact, he actually prefers this AA region to the Class A region in which W-W had

been competing. During summer drills, he said, the Tigers beat each of their region opponents and hope to do more of the same when the official region schedule begins after Christmas.

It won't be a sure thing though, he cautioned, because all the teams are fairly evenly matched and "anybody could beat anybody on a given night."

Results of the Greenbrier game were not available by press time and will be reported next week. In the other two games of the week, W-W lost to Lakeside 56-64 even though they shouldn't have. "We just hit a wall because we hadn't had enough practice," Keiser said.

In that contest Lucious Stewart led the Tigers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Larry Davis followed with 15 points and Scotty Long hit double figures with 10 points.

Against Taliaferro County, the Tigers prevailed with an easy 71-46 win led by Stewart again with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Kelmetrus Wylie came in next with 17 points followed by Davis with 11 and Jarekus Bowman with nine.

Other varsity players listed on the roster include Khiry Tutt, Gary Wilburn, Remardo King, Ricardo Davis, Keith Richardson, and Dee Dee Stewart.
