Annual ‘Gifts for Children’ drive starts; requests for needy children available

The Washington Police Department will again sponsor its annual “Gifts for Children” campaign this Christmas, and both toys and needy kids are needed.

“The Christmas season is rapidly approaching, and the officers of the Washington Police Department are committed to making the 2006 campaign the biggest ever,” Chief Mike Davis said.

The highlight of the campaign each year, said Asst. Chief Theodosia Glenn, is the appearance of Santa Claus in person, where he hands out gifts to children who have submitted their preference in advance.

Plans this year are to have Santa arrive at the police station on Friday morning, December 22, and spend from 9 a.m. to noon distributing gifts.

A form to submit the names of needy children and their first three gift choices is adjacent to this article. “Everyone who makes a request should meet Santa at the Police Department on December 22 to get their gifts,” Davis said. Children will receive candy and have their photos made with Santa.

Requests must be mailed to or dropped off by December 18. “Regrettably, requests received after December 18 cannot be honored,” Davis said. “Also, requests coming from outside Washington will be considered, but first priority goes to those inside the city. Requests that are duplicated with other organizations such as Angel Tree will not be accepted.”

Donations of toys, gifts, and money will be accepted at the Police Department any time. “Last year’s contributions were exceptional,” Davis said. “The support received from civic organizations, local merchants, and individuals made them the real heroes for our children. We just hope we can do better this year.

“Once again, I am asking for everyone’s help in this very important project,” Davis said. “Our lessfortunate children are very special, and in the true spirit of Christmas, please give generously to this most worthy cause. Thank you all.”
