Wilkes 4-Her takes first place in district achievement project Samantha Smith, a Wilkes County Cloverleaf 4-H’er took first place in Sheep and Meat Goats at the 4-H District Project Achievement held at Rock Eagle on November 18. Second place winners were James Blocksom, General Recreation; Katie Trimm, Performing Arts; Tiffany Guay, Beef; Lauren Chafin, Dairy; Rebecca Davis, Food Fare. Ivy Safrit placed third in Health. Other Cloverleaf 4-H’ers receiving placings were Amanda Smith, Horse; Sharkeia Wright, Sports; Tabatha Welch, Performing Arts- Vocal; and Leslie Souther, Performing Arts-Vocal. “They’re all really winners,” said Marcie Simpson, Wilkes 4-H coordinator. “It took a lot of work and practice for each young person to prepare for this event.” Each 4-H’er gave an illustrated talk or demonstration on a topic they chose. Most demonstrations last about four minutes. The 4-H’ers chose from 63 projects for their demonstration. Volunteer and teen leaders helped the 4-H’ers prepare for DPA and some attended with the youth. The adults attending were County Extension Agent Marcie Simpson and County Program Assistant Jackie Crew. Teen leaders who attended were Nick Reville, Mariah Crew, Chance Stickney, Josh McLeory, Michael Edwards, and Brittany Klaus. 4-H started in 1905 with corn clubs for boys and tomato clubs for girls. Since then, the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension 4- H and Youth Program has helped thousands of Georgia’s youth “learn by doing to make the best better.”
