Dr. and Mrs. Robert L. Whipple IV honored at after wedding reception Dr. and Mrs. Robert L. Whipple IV of Newnan were guests of honor at an after wedding reception and barbecue given by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Smith, at The Shop at the Smith Farm on the Danburg Road Saturday, November 18. Dr. Robert Whipple and Mrs. Whipple, the former Claudia Smith, were married Saturday, November 11, at Lake Toxaway, N.C. Country casual was the attire for the affair and the bride wore red jeans, a denim jacket and white shirt. The bridegroom was attired in khaki and navy. Guests enjoyed a scenic drive through the farm on the beautiful autumn day and arrived at The Shop where they were welcomed by the hosts and greeted the newlyweds. A wrought iron table featured a book where guests could register and offer a few “words of wisdom”. The large concrete patio area outside the shop was decorated with ferns, relic milk jugs of pampas grass and peace lilies. To one side was a wagon that belonged to the bride’s maternal grandfather, the late Claude Hood. The wagon was filled with hay bales, old farm tools, cedar, ferns and branches with fallcolored leaves. Nearby was the operating table and veterinarian satchel that belonged to her paternal grandfather, the late Dr. Clyde L. Smith. Peace lilies atop hay bales provided the backdrop for this table which featured the wedding cake, a threetiered square confection iced in a basket weave pattern and adorned with clusters of red roses, white daisies, Monte casino and greenery. The cake was later served with coffee by Mrs. Jon Conard of Washington. To the other side of the patio a birdbath held a magnificent arrangement of dozens of red roses, white daisies, Boston and springeri fern, Monte casino and seeded eucalyptus. Also in the area was a Coca- Cola box containing iced water and greenery. A park bench was draped with a quilt handmade by maternal grandmother, the late Mrs. Claude Hood. Inside the shop the buffet at one end was decorated with a red checked cloth and featured a pottery happy pig filled with red roses, white daisies, fern and Monte casino sitting atop a raised plateau. A pottery hen with a matching arrangement topped the gift table at the opposite end of the shop. Round tables for dining were covered with checked cloths and centered with smaller designs of red roses and white daisies. Guests enjoyed a bountiful buffet of barbecue, stew, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, pickles, bread and tea. An oval wooden “biscuit making” bowl that also belonged to Mrs. Hood, held bandanas used for napkins.
One hundred fifty guests were invited. Out-of-town guests included Dr. and Mrs. Robert Whipple III of Newnan; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith of Athens; Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Cauthen of Moreland; Mr. and Mrs. Ron Gahring, Mr. and Mrs. Dave James, Chapman and Lindsey, of Newnan; Mr. and Mrs. Steve Higgins of Stone Mountain; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hood and Susan Fortner of Gainesville; Mr. and Mrs. Burke Johnson, Walker and William, of Danielsville; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Jones of Jonesboro; Dr. Martha McCranie of Augusta; Mr. and Mrs. Brent Marable and Jack Durham of Watkinsville; and Dr. and Mrs. David Reuhle of Thomson.
