Lunch and Learn Club enjoys annual Christmas gathering Eight members of the Rayle Lunch and Learn Club met at the Rayle City Hall Wednesday, December 6, and traveled to the home of Doris Smathers in the Jackson Crossroads area of the county for their annual Christmas gathering. Traveling together in a carpool they arrived about 10:30 and were greeted at the door by Doris with a smile and a hug. The house was festively decorated for the Christmas season. After all the oooing and aahing over her beautiful home with her collection of roosters and hens everywhere, everyone settled down to a prayer and reading of a version of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Mildred Sisson gave the devotional. Betty Winfrey read “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” Christmas music played softly in the background. Doris had baked a turkey, dressing, giblet gravy, homemade rolls, and all kinds of delicious dishes. All the other members brought their specialties including ham, macaroni and cheese, pineapple casserole, cranberry congealed salad, spiced apple rings, cranberry sauce, green beans, corn, pickles, deviled eggs, pear salad and other dishes. Desserts were a pumpkin roll, apple cake and iced pound cake. After the food was blessed by Mildred Sisson everyone sat in the dining-kitchen area and enjoyed the delicious meal with tea and coffee. The time of fellowship and gift exchange followed. Everyone excitedly opened their gift. There were three door prizes which were won by Ann Williamson, Peggy Echols, and Christine Wheatley. It was just like going to Grandma’s house with Doris’ wonderful hospitality. It was a happy and fun day and everyone was truly blessed.
Those present with the hostess were Peggy Echols, Betty Winfrey, Ruth Flynt, Ann Williamson, Mildred Sisson, Sudie Kennedy, Christine Wheatley, and Bonnie Boatwright.
