Bowman is Player of the Week in Peach Belt for play at ASU

A.J. BOWMAN EYES THE RIM FOR ANOTHER SLAM DUNK The former Tiger is continuing to make his mark at Augusta State.
Tiger basketball fans don’t have to have long memories to recall the days when “A.J.” dominated the action on the courts and thrilled crowds with his spectacular dunks and impressive blocks. Well, he’s not gone – he’s just taken it to the next level.

Tyrekus Bowman moved on from Washington-Wilkes to become an Augusta State University Jaguar and is now beginning his junior year there. He is still an outstanding leader on the basketball court and just this week was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Player of the Week.

Even though the Jaguars lost two of three games during the week, Bowman was stellar as he led his team in scoring in all three games. In fact, he has scored in double figures in all six games of ASU’s young season and led the Jags in scoring in four of the six.

Last Tuesday, December 5, he got started in a 76-66 win over Queens when he led the team with 23 points in the home opener. He sank 25 points, pulled down six rebounds, and had five steals against North Carolina Central on Friday even though the team lost 75-77 in overtime. He also hit the first two threepointers of his college career in that game.

On Saturday, he upped the ante with 33 points and nine rebounds against Cheyney in the Hilton RTP Classic tournament.

According to the school’s web- site, “For the week, Bowman shot 61 percent from the field (31-of-51) and 73 percent from the free-throw line. He currently leads the PBC in scoring at 23.1 points per game, ranks fourth in the league in blocked shots (1.8 per game), and fifth in rebounding (7.3 per game).”

The Jaguars will host Paine College in a doubleheader on Saturday, December 16, in the Christenberry Fieldhouse in Augusta. The women’s game begins at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game scheduled to follow at 7:30.

Bowman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Bowman Jr. of Tignall. His brother, Jarekus, is a member of the W-W Tiger varsity basketball team this season.
