Scarboroughs express thanks for memorial and community TO THE EDITOR: The dedication of the memorial bench on The Square in memory of our Phil on the Marine Corps’ birthday was a day filled with emotion for us. On that beautiful November morning we gathered to honor not only Phil but all who have had a part in insuring our freedom which we hold so dear. Phil was proud to be a marine and he was a good marine. As a child he loved to play “army.” I have talked with several families since Phil’s death who have been through this and there are similar accounts of their sons’ love of being a defender of good – fighting evil. Phil had many plans and was anxious to return to civilian life after his service. But he knew he had an obligation and duty above personal desires. He loved his country and was a true patriot. It was an honor for him to take part in protecting that which is worth protecting. God has been so good to us. Phil hated goodbyes. One second he was returning from a mission, the next second he was with the Lord. God has walked us through this day by day. He gives us what we need when we need it and surrounds us with a community of compassionate friends. We want to thank everyone who had a part in this day of remembrance. God bless you and God bless America. With grateful hearts,
PHYLLIS AND MIKE SCARBOROUGH
