Wilkes Community Partnership groups attend Christmas carol concert at Morehouse College On Friday, December 1, participants in several of the Wilkes County Community Partnership (WCCP) Programs, the Juvenile Mentoring Program (JUMP), the Abstinence and ORBIT Leadership Councils, attended the Eightieth Annual Morehouse-Spelman Christmas Carol Concert at The Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel on the Morehouse College Campus in Atlanta. “Our spirits were lifted exponentially; it was a priceless cultural experience for our children,” JUMP Coordinator Amethyst Wynn said. “This is the third year of attendance for our group.” “The Wilkes County Community Partnership Programs promote relationship development through community projects that involve the youth with a variety of academic and cultural events,” Carolyn Reynolds, Executive Director of the Partnership, said. “One of the main goals of the various programs is to help the youth make positive and healthy life choices. Experiencing the concert and the college atmosphere will hopefully create an affinity for school and acceptance of higher values.” Approximately 50 students and a dozen adults, mentors, and parents attended the concert. The group departed from the Reese Booker Center on Booker Street. Mentor M. V. Booker provided a meal for the bus ride to Atlanta. They arrived at 7 p.m. to take pic- tures and find seating together for the 8 p.m. concert. “The performance was wonderful,” stated Youth Leadership Coordinator Dot Jordan. “The children enjoyed each performance, especially Sarah Stephens’ and Kevin Johnson’s “We are Christmas” performed by the Spelman’s Glee Club. And they were well-behaved.” After the concert, the group did a bit of sightseeing in downtown Atlanta on the way to a late-evening snack at The Varsity. It was big fun for the youth, especially when they saw a gold Hummer stretch limousine in The Varsity parking lot. Unfortunately, the driver would not divulge the owner or patron. They supposed it was a famous star, and took pictures.
