‘Night of Lights’ winners announced

The home of Lavinia and Brian Henderson was first in the single-story category.
Homes all over Washington lit up the night for the Iris Garden Club’s annual “Night of Lights” last Wednesday, December 20.

Chairman Marcia Paxton said that some 18 homeowners took part in the club’s annual Christmas decorating contest, and she named winners in each category.

Traditionally decorated homes were judged in categories for residential one-story and two-story homes, and a category for novelty homes returned. Prizes were $25 for first, $15 for second place, and $10 for third in each category.

First place in the two-story home category went to the home of O.A. Denard on Tignall Road. First place in the single story category went to the home of Lavinia and Brian Henderson on Lexington Road. In the novelty category, the Kendall Drive home of Nettie Belle Merriwether took first place.

Second place homes were the 2- story home of Charlotte Simmons on Spring Street, the single-story home of Steve and Eleanor Blackmon, and the novelty decorations of Jeff and Shawn Hackney’s home on Lovelace Way.

The home of Nettie Belle Merriwether was first in the novelty category.
Third place went to the Betty Slaton home on West Robert Toombs, the South Jefferson Street home of Tom and Melanie Wells, and the home of John Sutherland in the 3500 block of Lundberg Road.

Judging so many homes was a big task for the judges, but they hope for even more participation next year. “There were some beautifully decorated homes around town that weren’t entered in the contest,” Paxton said. “We hope to get the word out earlier next year and really light up the whole town.”
The home of Charlotte Simmons won second place in the two-story category. A photo of the first place winner, the O.A. Denard home, was not available by press time for this issue.
