Suggests ‘Growth and Development Commission’
David Chesnutt (right), a retired Atlanta attorney and resident of Washington, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, December 19. Chesnutt discussed ideas of a “Future Growth and Development Commission” for Washington. He explained that such a commission should be devoid of politics, have the power to hold public hearings, and be sufficiently funded to work properly. He told members that Washington is not ready for future development, does not want the current community to change, has no marketing plan, and doesn’t know what it wants to sell. He emphasized that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), passed during the Clinton Administration, changed forever economic development activities in the country. He urged that the community vigorously support the Board of Education and demand improvements in the local educational system. In addition, he indicated that the community should develop renewed, vigorous, and out-of-the-box ideas to improve its economic base – otherwise, he said, “we’ll face either sudden growth or stagnation.” Steve deShazo was the program host for the day.
