Lamar Davenport Jr.

Funeral services for Rev. Lamar Davenport Jr., 78, were held Saturday, December 23, 2006, at New Springhill Baptist Church, Philomath, with Rev. G.L. Avery officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Rayle. He died Tuesday, December 19, at Wills Memorial Hospital.

Rev. Davenport was a longtime resident of Wilkes County and was a licensed funeral director and owner of Davenport & McLendon Mortuary Inc. He was a licensed and

ordained Baptist minister and was the pastor of five churches for 42 years until his retirement in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Dr. Vivien Harmon Davenport; three daughters, Gwendolyn E. Davenport, Evelyn Hudson, and Minister Diane Walton; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers included members of the clergy.

Davenport & McLendon Mortuary Inc. was in charge of arrangements.
