Tiger cagers win 4 straight before Christmas
The winning streak began with a rout of Taliaferro County on Tuesday, December 12, in which five Tigers scored in double figures. WW took the easy win, blowing our Taliaferro 96-46. The following Friday, December 15, the boys started a long road trip and got revenge by besting Lakeside who had handed them a loss two weeks prior. The next two games provided some real excitement for Washington Wilkes as the Tigers’ opponents took them right down to the wire with both games being decided with less than half a minute to go. Against Warren County’s Screaming Devils on Monday, December 18, Jarekus Bowman hit a 3-pointed with just 16 seconds left on the clock wo break the tie and seal the win at 80-77. He had 12 points total for the game and there were three other Tigers that hit double figures. Junior Tiger Lucious Stewart led the team with a triple-double as he poured in 24 points, snagged 14 rebounds, and had 11 assists. Khiry Tutt was next with 19 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Gary Wilburn who sank 10 points. Kelmetrus Wylie also figured strongly in the game with seven points and eight assists. The Tigers survived a 69-67 squeaker the next night in Banks County. It was the first time the team had played on consecutive days and it was almost more than they could handle. “We looked dead,” Head Coach Don Keiser said. And it seemed as if that wasn’t the whole extent of the Tigers’ troubles. “We just couldn’t get the calls,” Keiser continued. “We had 24 fouls and they had only eight. They were just letting them do whatever they wanted.” The game was a roller coaster ride and every time W-W would build up a good lead, Banks would find a way to whittle it back down. Finally at the end, with the score tied at 67-67, Wilburn hit a 15-footer from the baseline to win the game with just 10 seconds on the clock. “Everything they did was right and we were dead tired,” Keiser said, adding that even the Banks coach said his team had its best game ever. Even though Banks is in Region 8-AA, the game is not considered a region game because there is no crossover between subregions. Stewart was again the leader for the Tigers with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Bowman was hot with 16 points and Khiry Tutt had a good defensive night with four blocked shots. Wylie continued his leadership with 11 assists.
The Jackson County Christmas Tournament began yesterday, December 27, for the Tigers with an 8:30 p.m. start against Jackson County. Due to an early press deadline because of the holidays, results were not available for this issue. The Tigers also play today and tomorrow but times depend on the outcome of Wednesday’s game.
