College students awarded $2,000 in Reese J. Booker scholarships

A total of $2,000 in certificates was given to 11 college students from the Reese J. Booker Scholarship fund during the annual program held Sunday, December 24, at the Mark's Tabernacle Baptist Church, Lexington Avenue, Washington.

The Reese J. Booker bonus scholarship certificate valued at $1,000 was received by Kim Evans. She is a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church and attends Athens Tech, majoring in Medical Coding.

Students receiving $100 scholarship certificates were Cherie Bell, Marks Tabernacle, majoring in Dental Hygiene at Athens Tech; Markeith Wylie, Timothy Baptist Church, majoring in Criminal Justice at Georgia Military College; Tyrekus (A.J.) Bowman, Pole Branch Baptist Church, majoring in Business at Augusta State University; Rashawn Raiford, Pole Branch Baptist Church, majoring in Computer Science at Augusta State; Jamaal Carlos Bradley, Pole Branch Baptist, majoring in Accounting at Fort Valley University; Mrs. Johnnie Booker, Harvest Time, majoring in Medical Manager Assistant at Tidewater Tech online; Rev. Lance Pitts, Pleasant Grove, majoring in English at Augusta State; Alicia Finnell, Mark's Tabernacle, pursuing a doctorate in Occupational Education at the University of Georgia; Roxann Cobbs, and Rev. Dwight Foster, Hilliard's Station, students at Augusta Tech.

Anita Rolland was mistress of ceremonies for the program which began with a devotional led by Albert Shank and Willie Burns. Scripture was read by Tyrin Fanning. Clara Sutton welcomed those attending and stated the purpose of the meeting and gave acknowledgements.

Clifford Hanson gave a statement on "As I Knew Mr. Booker." Music was rendered by Rev. Lance Pitts, choirs from Reid's Chapel, Springfield Mass Community Choir, New Sutton's Temple, and Fairfield Praise and Worship.

Rev. Dante Smith introduced 12- year-old Minister Torey Fountain of Atlanta whose sermon was titled "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet," taken from John 9:1-3. He is a member of Fairfield Baptist Church in Lithonia.

The program raised more than $1,300 for the scholarship fund.

Each scholarship recipient is asked to obtain a current letter or statement on the college's letterhead, stamped with the college seal and stating that the student is currently enrolled in college as of January 2007. This information should be given to Clara Sutton on the payoff date which is Saturday, January 27, at 409-B Lexington Avenue, Washington, by 10 a.m.

Students who do not pick up their money on the due date stated will have until February 10. If the money is not picked up by that date it will be returned to the scholarship fund to help other college students.

Anyone interested in making a donation to the fund should make checks payable to the Reese J. Booker Scholarship and mail in care of Clara Sutton, P.O. Box 261, Washington 30673.
