Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School and Washington- Wilkes Middle School have announced Monday, February 5, as the date of a joint open house for parents and students of each school. From 3:30-6 p.m. during the open house, parents will be allowed to meet with teachers and to pick up their children's progress reports for the first 4½ weeks of this semester. More ... The Washington-Wilkes Middle School Math Team participated in the third annual Rockdale Mathematics Competition at Rockdale County High School on Saturday, January 20, and received second place out of 10 teams. The Washington Kiwanis Club was treated to an "acoustic duo" provided by Peter Bragg (right) and Chris Hughes at the club's regular meeting on Tuesday, January 22. Bragg, a Georgia Forestry Commission pilot, and Hughes, the Washington-Wilkes airport's fixed base operator, performed a medley of popular songs for the enjoyment of a packed house of members and guests. More ... A Diabetic education meeting will be held at the Wills Memorial Hospital library at 2 p.m. today, January 25. The meeting will focus on the learning needs of all persons with diabetes in the community. The group will continue to meet on a monthly basis at WMH. Future dates and times will be discussed at the first meeting. Areas of concern for diabetics will also be discussed at the meeting. More ... Registration for the 2007 Summer Drama Camp to be held at the Washington Little Theater will begin on March 23. Students from kindergarten through the twelfth grade are invited to attend. On Friday, January 19, Patrell Turman, a W-WCHS student, came and spoke to our student body about "Pennies for Patients." Patrell is a cancer survivor having battled cancer his freshmen year in high school. Pennies for Patients is a new fund-raiser at the middle school to collect money for patients who are sick with Leukemia or other blood cancers. More ... The CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority Inc. will have a mass food distribution in Wilkes County on Thursday, February 1, at the McDonald's warehouse, 1024 East Robert Toombs Avenue, from 9 a.m. until all food is gone. The distribution is for low-income and elderly persons, serving a total of 125 families in Wilkes County, and will provide fruits, vegetables, canned meats, and juices. More ... The Georgia Hunters for the Hungry (GHFTH) is a program through which deer, donated by hunters, become nutritious venison to benefit those who need it the most. In 2006, participating hunters donated almost 29,000 pounds of venison - the most ever collected in one year by this program.
