New plantings grace The Square

Landscape designer Robert Aiken supervises city workers and pre-release center inmates as they lower one of three large tree-form ligustrums into the center of The Square. The evergreens are being joined Wednesday by four large willow oaks placed at the corners of the center area, and other plantings and lighting will come soon, Aiken said. Workers uncovered the brick foundations of the original 1817 courthouse as they dug a 5-foot hole for one of the willow oaks, and numerous old bricks were salvaged.
