Students, mentors, and community leaders will again gather to observe the National Mentoring Celebration. The celebration next Thursday will be held at the Third Shiloh Center on McLendon Drive. In honor of "Thank Your Mentor Day," the Wilkes County Community Partnership - JUMP Initiative (Juvenile Mentoring Program) will sponsor a special dinner and tribute to the JUMP Mentors on Thursday, February 1, 6 p.m. at the Third Shiloh Center located at 219 McLendon Drive.

The event is a part of a national mentoring celebration spearheaded by the Harvard Mentoring Project and MENTOR. This campaign focuses on the need for mentors and provides an opportunity to work in partnership with others to increase the number of mentors for aspiring young students. Communities In Schools (CIS) also has strong mentoring programs throughout the country. In Georgia there are 51 local affiliate programs and mentoring is a key component in helping atrisk youth. Generally when you talk to someone who is successful in life, they attribute their success to the help of a mentor or mentors.

The JUMP Initiative will join millions in honoring mentors. Most successful people say they had mentors along the way who guided and encouraged them. General Colin Powell points to the influence of his father; Senator John McCain credits a high school teacher and coach whose example strengthened his resolve during years of imprisonment in North Vietnam; and Oprah Winfrey cites a fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan, who taught her to believe in herself. Mentoring programs make a difference in children's lives.

Our 2007 theme is "Pass it on - Mentor a Child!!" We have all been mentored. It may have been an uncle or aunt, a teacher, bus driver, coworker or coach; it could have been a Sunday school teacher, a pastor, choir director, or community leader. Being a mentor is one of the best decisions you will ever make. It means a chance to gain a new friend, and see the world - and be seen - through fresh new eyes. No matter where you are in life right now, being a mentor will make it better. It is our sincere desire that you will "share what you know and become a mentor."

The process is simple to become a JUMP Mentor; and your role as a mentor is supported by ongoing opportunities for shared activities, the ability to meet on a regular basis for fun activities planned by JUMP staff for all mentors and mentees. To learn more, just call or ask - we'll answer your questions, and get you started fast.

We have had wonderful support throughout the years from all segments of the community, including business, industry, churches, civic clubs, and private individuals. Everyone can get involved.
