What do you do on nasty weather days like Sunday? We watch TV, of course. I wonder how men managed to watch TV without a remote control years ago. I guess they didn't have a problem when there were only about four or five channels. I understand the remotes are owned and controlled by men. They really bother me because you can be watching something then, zip, it's on to another channel. We never manage to watch a complete program on TV. I just wondered if other wives have the same problem. I remember once when my grandson Curt, who was about three at the time, was watching TV when the electricity went off. He yelled, "Get the remote!" See, they learn early in life to rely on that remote. ..Let's keep Tignall's City Policeman Larry Fort in our prayers. He is in intensive care at Athens Regional Hospital. ..Daisy Hall had knee surgery last Thursday. Hopefully the surgery was successful ..The Young Adult Class at Tignall Baptist Church is busy hosting showers. There was a baby shower for Brooke Dawson Sunday afternoon. There will be a baby shower for Lori Tucker on Sunday, February 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Family Life Center. Then on Sunday, February 18, from 2 to 4, there will be a wedding shower for Len and Susan Poss. Showers are so much fun. I've decided that everyone needs a shower after being married around 30 years because everything is worn out by then. ..Another baby shower was given at Mallorysville Baptist Church Sunday for Stacy and Amanda Hilley of Commerce. Stacy is Nancy and David Hilley's son. This couple is expecting a boy in March. The church had a covered dish meal after the service with the shower following. Vivianne Wilson and Marion Hammond had done the decorating for the shower and had done a super job. ..Don't forget the soup and sandwich lunch after the morning service Sunday, January 28, at Tignall Baptist Church, sponsored by the youth of the church. The church families are invited. ..Visiting Wilbur and Ouida Maney over the weekend were their daughter, Debra Smith, and her sons, Morris and Gelani, of Covington. ..Gertrude Long enjoyed a visit from her daughter and family, Nancy and Bobby Smith, and their three sons from Wilmington, N.C., over the weekend. ..Celebrating birthdays Saturday night at Rafferty's in Athens were Ernest and Faye Lamar, Layton and Gloria Harris, and Ronnie and Suzie Futch. Those with birthdays in January were Ernest, Layton, Gloria and Suzie. I don't think they acted their age either. ..We are glad to hear that Mary Webster, who had surgery recently, is now at home and is doing well. ..The Beulah Baptist Church WMU visited the new Harper's Personal Care in Washington last week. They served ice cream and cake to the residents. Carolyn Harper gave the group a tour of the facilities. Those in the WMU group were Paula Butts and little Harper, Louise Harper, Charlene Rigdon, Tillie Bufford, Faye Durham, Linda Daniel, Billie Carol and Celeste Adams. ..Last Wednesday, Becky Dixon met her sister, Cliffy Ware of Evans, at Fievet's and they had lunch together. ..Scott, Kathy and Stacey Ware had supper Saturday night with Kathy's parents, Paul and Gail Vandiver in Union Point. ..Pam Barnwell of Houston, Texas, is visiting Daisy Hall Parker, while Daisy recovers from surgery. Pam is the daughter of Daisy Hall Parker and the late Billy Hall. She is married to Dr. Phillip Barnwell who is Dr. Paul Barnwell's son and is practicing chiropractic in Houston, Texas. Pam and Phillip have four children, Amanda 21, Abigail 20, Paul 18, and Virginia 13. Pam will be in Tignall for two weeks. ..The Garrett pond has really filled up in a hurry with all this rain we have been having. All the ponds in the area look really good; however Clark Hill (as we Georgians will always call it) is still low. ..It seems that the United States is the only industrialized country in the world that does not use the metric system as its predominant system of measurement. Back in 1975, Congress "encouraged" the use of the metric system; however, the American public has largely ignored this encouragement. In 2010, the European Union will allow only the use of metric units and prohibit the use of any other measurement. The Department of Commerce is now saying that American products and services in world markets will become increasingly hampered without a change. Okay, I'll have cup of coffee, just 227 grams please. ..Guess we'll all miss our daffodils in early spring. They are all blooming now in January. As it has been said, ". . . when we see things in nature that we've never seen in our life . . . it starts to feel creepy, like a "Twilight Zone" segment. We half expect to wake one day and find Rod Serling mowing the lawn - in shorts." ..Gas prices seem to be coming right on down. Last week in metro Atlanta, prices at the pump were $1.89 to $1.99 per gallon. Dropping below $2.00 a gallon is a good thing! .. Another real eye sore in the county is the dumpsters near the Sandtown and Highway 44 crossing. Traveling down the Sandtown Road, taking a left on Highway 44, the next road to the left is the corner where these unsightly dumpsters appeared. Please, Wilkes County citizens, get it in the dumpsters - not in the vicinity! ..As everyone knows, Harper's Personal Care Home has now moved to Washington (the old Bootleggers). After visiting, we now want to report that it is a great facility. The atrium area is large, bright and cheerful. The dining room is huge and is likewise cheerful. Even though we had to give up our sweet little ladies, we now can feel better about it knowing they are in such a beautiful facility. Thank you, Carolyn and staff.
