Stubbs presents information about butterfly gardens to Iris Garden Club
Karen Stubbs presented a very interesting and informative program, "Butterflies of Georgia," at the Iris Garden Club meeting Tuesday, January 9, at the Episcopal Parish House.
Mrs. Stubbs described the stages of the butterfly. She showed beautiful photographs of different species of butterflies that she and her husband, David, took in their yard last summer. Mrs. Stubbs informed members how they could create butterfly gardens of their own. Each was given a list of all the Georgia butterflies, their flight period, larval host plants and adult nectar plants and food. Each was also given a diagram with a butterfly garden plan that included many plants to attract butterflies and a packet of dwarf yellow cosmos seeds to plant in her own yard.
Prior to the program Mrs. Stubbs, president, called the meeting to order and read the Collect.
She thanked hostesses, Ruth Adams, Anna Gunter, Catherine Hessert and Rena Strickland.
Officers and committee chairmen gave their reports. Laura Toburen reported Arbor Day was coming up and she would see that a tree would be planted in Washington in February. Oleta McAvoy reported the Iris Garden Club had sent two large boxes of items to Central State Hospital for the Fig Leaf project. Dot Harris reported that the gardens at Wilkes Health Care Center are complete for the season and noted that the activities director had done an outstanding job, with the help of local merchants, in decorating for Christmas and assisting patients to be able to enjoy the gardens and decorations.
During a time of announcements Mrs. Toburen reminded members to attend the Battle of Kettle Creek festivities on February 10. She also thanked the club for the seed packets that were sent to 130 families at Christmas through the Angel Tree project sponsored by the First United Methodist Church.
The next meeting of the club will be Tuesday, February 13, at the Parish House. The Sharon Raytown Garden Club will present a program on flower shows and chrysanthemums. Hostesses for the meeting will be Jane Bundy, Marcia Campbell, Dot Harris and Gail Boyd.
Present for the January meeting were Ruth Adams, Debbie Bennett, Mary Ann Bentley, Gail Boyd, Sandy Burton, Mary Lou Dyer, Dot Harris, Catherine Hessert, Annetta Hilliard, Norma Hopkins, Nobie Keener, Nancy McAvoy, Oleta McAvoy, Marilyn Pasco, Franny Robinson, Cathy Stackhouse, Rena Strickland, Karen Stubbs, Marian Thorpe, Laura Toburen, Patsy Winn, and Sharlene Zima.
