Students honored for excellence by Lincoln-Wilkes retired teachers
      The Lincoln-Wilkes Retired Educators Association honored Wilkes County middle and high school students for academic excellence for the first semester of 2006-2007. Middle school students had an overall average of 95 or above and high school students had an overall average of 95 or above in four courses.

Jenkins graduates from basic training
      Army Pvt. Cadaricus A. Jenkins has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition, and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training.

      Matt and Easton Smith, sons of Sonny and Jennifer Sanders of Washington-Wilkes, attended the Rod Stewart concert at Phillips Arena in Atlanta on Saturday, January 20. This show was part of the singer's 2007 "Rocking in the Round" tour.

Gracie Hocutt honored at Polka Dot Soiree Jan. 21
      Madeline Grace Hocutt, daughter of Wayne and Blake Hocutt of Indian Trail, N.C., celebrated her first birthday with family and friends at a Polka Dot Soiree on Sunday, January 21, at her home. Her birthday was January 23. For her party Gracie wore a lavender chenille outfit with an embroidered cupcake on the front and polka dotted socks.

      Taylor McAvoy of Lavonia enjoyed her fifth birthday on Sunday, January 7, with two parties on her birthday weekend. Taylor is the daughter of Shala Hendry of Lavonia and Richard and Mandy McAvoy of Washington. On Saturday, January 6, Taylor enjoyed an indoor swimming party at the home of Inez Roach with her friends from Grace Academy Preschool.

      Samantha Harkins, daughter of Jimmy and Amy Harkins, was five years old on January 12 and was treated to several celebrations. Samantha enjoyed a party on her birthday as she shared cake, Cheetos and punch with her school friends. That evening she was honored at a special dinner with her parents, brother, Nicklaus; and uncle and aunt, Billy and Susan Campbell of Tignall.

      The Vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Mediator entertained at a reception honoring the Rev. Dr. Denise Moss and the Rev. Dr. David Moss and marking their arrival to Washington where she will begin her ministry at the church. The occasion was held at the home of Betty Slaton on East Robert Toombs Avenue Sunday afternoon, January 28.

      The Woman's Club of Washington will again celebrate the season by hosting the John Duggan Memorial Scholarship Dinner at the clubhouse on Monday evening, February 12, at 7 p.m. The evening promises to be delightful as a wonderful menu and program is planned.

Ben Wheatley graduates from LeCordon Bleu- Atlanta Jan. 13
      Ben Wheatley graduated magna cum laude from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts - Atlanta on January 13 with an Associate of Occupational Science degree in Culinary Arts. While at Le Cordon Bleu, Ben was a member of the Le Cordon Bleu Honor Society. He completed his externship at the Inn at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tenn., in December.

      Hope Ashley Nuhfer, daughter of Mark and Tracie Vinson Nuhfer of Watkinsville, celebrated her seventh birthday on January 5 and was honored on several occasions. On Friday night Hope hosted a slumber party at her house with friends from school. They all decorated their own cupcakes and slept in the living room by the fire.

Oakley celebrated with a red, black and white #1 shaped cake of his own while his guests enjoyed a Georgia Bulldog sheet cake. Also served were hot dogs, hamburgers, Cheetos, cookies and CapriSuns.
