Report from The Potter's House: 'God has worked many miracles'

2007-02-01 / Worship

(Editor's note: The Potter's House is a missionary Baptist church in West Bank, British Columbia, Canada, pastored by Kevin Madden, a native of Washington. He and his wife, Alicia, started the church some years ago and it has grown steadily since that time. In an area spritually very unlike the "Bible Belt" in the southern U.S., the work the Maddens and their church are doing, with God's direct help, is often remarkable, even miraculous. There have been many won to Christ. In his latest letter, printed here, Madden tells one of those stories.)

astound- to overwhelm with amazement. Our God is astounding.

Three years ago we had the privilege of seeing a beautiful English woman in her early 80's commit her life to Jesus and be baptized. Her name is Joyce King. As Joyce was entering the very warm hot tub to be baptized she proclaimed in her proper British accent, "I think they are going to cook me." Everyone laughed. Kevin quickly added cold water to the "Porta Party" hot tub we had rented (complete with tiki torches). The salvation and baptism of this incredible woman was one of the highlights of our ministry here. Since coming to Christ she has faithfully prayed for her husband, Walter, to come to know Christ. Walter seemed far from God and was not interested in attending church with Joyce. However, Joyce persevered in her faith.

Several months ago Walter was admitted to the hospital in Kelowna. He was very ill. His kidneys were failing and his situation was serious. Kevin sat with the family in the hospital waiting room as the doctor gave the grim news that there was only a 10 % chance that Walter would survive this illness and ever leave the hospital. The family was devastated at the news. They were especially concerned because Walter didn't know Jesus. They prayed for a miracle. We enlisted our church body to pray. God placed a deep burden on several members of our body to intercede for this man.

God has since worked many miracles. Walter's kidneys began to function and he began to improve. He was able to come home from the hospital 3 weeks after the Doctor delivered the bleak prognosis. The church body continued to pray for Walter and several people took meals, and offered encouraging words to Walter and Joyce. God was not only healing Walter's body but also healing his soul. One week after being released from the hospital Walter came to church. It was very moving to see this man who could barely walk come out in the middle of winter to church. Each step seemed to take all of his energy as he entered the movie theatre on his walker. At the end of the service he began to move forward and asked if he could share something with the church. He thanked the church for praying for him. He said that God heard the prayers of the church body and that he is a miracle.

In early January Walter entered into a personal relationship with Jesus in his living room with Kevin and Joyce. He wanted to put his trust and faith in the God who answers prayer. This man in his mid 80's is a babe in Christ. His countenance displays the beauty of the Lord. He is a new creation. He has come to worship almost every Sunday since. He has many questions and is hungry to learn about Christ. Our Lord is amazing. He performs miracles and loves to astound his children.

Please pray for Walter and Joyce on Tuesday as they will bury their son, Terry. He died this past Monday from cancer. Kevin will have the privilege of sharing at the Funeral. Terry, Walter's son, became a believer 6 years ago and was able to leave this earth knowing that both his parents know Jesus. He had great peace knowing that his dad had given his life to Christ and that they will be together in heaven.

We are blessed to be on this journey. Thank you for praying with us.
