Plans finalized for WHS Class of 1952 Scholarship presentation

Six members of the Washington High School Class of l952 met at the Mary Willis Library on January 27 to finalize plans for the presentation of a $500 scholarship to a 2007 graduating senior of Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School.

This will be the first scholarship awarded from the Class of l952 Scholarship Fund established at the fiftieth reunion of the class on June 8, 2002.

The l952 Scholarship Fund will be administered by The Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area. Distributions from the earnings of the Fund will be made available for scholarship awards for deserving students identified by the trustees of the Fund. Interested seniors can apply through the school's guidance counselor, Don Bridges. Plans are for the scholarship to be presented at the Graduation Banquet on May 17, 2007. The recipient and his or her parents will be invited to attend the 55th Class of 1952 reunion on May 19.

The Class of l952 was the first twelfth grade class of Washington High School. Don Taylor of Atlanta, the class treasurer, has spearheaded the efforts to establish this scholarship. Others present at the meeting were Jackie Garrett Price of Harlem, class president; Bootsie Lucas Averette of Hephzibah, David Hopkins of Augusta, Henry McAvoy and Ruth Hendrix Rogers of Washington.
