Seniors to get free legal help March 6 at Senior Center
      Members of the staff of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) will be in Wilkes County to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal help, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Senior citizens 60 years of age or older who have a civil (non-criminal) legal issue may be able to receive help. A GLSP staff member will be in Wilkes County to meet with seniors from 10 a.m.

Cruisers donate to local organizations
     In keeping with their policy of making donations from fund-raising projects to Washington-Wilkes organizations, the Memory Lane Cruisers made several presentations during the February meeting of the club. Recipients were (l-r) Rev. Albert Huyck and Dot Harris on behalf of the Salvation Army; Manual Bailey and Bonnie Branch, the Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter; and Lillie Crow, Mary Willis Library. The donations were presented by Joe Charping, president; and Blake Thompson, EMS. A donation was also made to the fire department but no one was able to attend the meeting.

Wilkes 4-H Dairy Show Team to compete in Perry Saturday
      The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy Show Team is heading to Perry for the 2007 State Junior Commercial Dairy Heifer Show this weekend. "The team has been working hard under the volunteer leadership of Frank and Carol Jackson," said County Agent Rick Smith who reported that the team has grown by eight exhibitors this year.

      Shown above is one of the sweet little puppies at the Washington- Wilkes Animal Shelter. The puppies need good stable homes. They are wormed and have their first vaccinations.

Something good on TV
      I was watching an old "Bonanza" rerun on television when I caught something that was a good moral in one of the stories. I know some of these smart alecs make fun of Bonanza - a bunch of grown men sitting around saying "Pa this and Pa that!" This particular program was about an elderly couple.

I Shouldn't Even Be Doing This
      Although Bob Newhart is no longer a regular in a comedy series, he has appeared as an actor on Desperate Housewives and ER (and earned an Emmy nomination for that one.) He states in the introduction that he couldn't write a memoir, which has to be a "weighty tome.

Spring Tour of Homes has new schedule; Dowling home in Danburg will be featured
      The Washington-Wilkes Spring Tour of Homes 2007 will have a different schedule this year from years past. Both the Day Tour and the Candlelight Tour will be held on Saturday. There will be no tours on Friday or Sunday. The tours will be held on Saturday, March 31, with the Day Tour hours being 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.; and the Candlelight Tour, 6-9 p.m.

Jim Whitehead to run for Norwood's U.S. House seat
      Republican State Senator Jim Whitehead announced early this week that he will run for the open 10th Congressional District seat vacated by the passing of Representative Charlie Norwood. While the special election to fill Norwood's seat is officially nonpartisan, Whitehead said he will run and serve as a Republican. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue will set the special election before Friday.

Civil War Round Table to hear Louis Regenstein on 'Last Order of Confederacy' Monday evening
      Lewis Regenstein will present the complete story of the last order of the Confederate Government to the Washington Civil War Round Table meeting at 6 p.m., Monday night, February 26, at The Fitzpatrick Hotel on the Square in Washington. The public is invited, Round Table President, Claibourne Darden says. "The cost of the meeting is $10 per person and includes a very nice dinner.

Club gets update on school system
     Joyce Williams (right), superintendent of Wilkes County schools, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, February 20. She updated members on things that are going on in the local schools and said that the system is financially sound, doing well, had achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals for the last three years, achieved an 80% graduation rate, and had received the Governor's Cup for significant improvement in Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores. Williams also said that there are still improvements to be made and indicated that Kiwanis members themselves were an untapped resource that could help make students successful - the challenge was to figure out how to tap these resources. Lillie Crowe (left) was program host for the day.

State patrol, Wilkes deputies set up weeknight road checks
      The Georgia State Patrol and the Wilkes County Sheriffs Office teamed up for three separate roadblocks Monday night in Wilkes County, law enforcement officials report. "Leaders from the two agencies stated that Friday and Saturday night roadblocks have become routine," said GSP spokesman TFC Brent Marxsen.

Oscar Mayer chicken strips test positive for listeria germ
      A store sample of packaged Oscar Mayer Ready to Eat Chicken Breast Strips With Rib Meat has been found to contain Listeria monocytogenes, according to an announcement made by Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin. Georgia Department of Agriculture food scientists found the contamination late last week.

North Alexander School Assn. to hold new membership drive at Fitzpatrick today at 5:30 p.m.
      The first event to be sponsored by the newly reactivated North Alexander School Association (NASA) will be a membership drive wine and cheese party to be held tonight, February 22, in the Fitzpatrick Hotel ballroom beginning at 5:30 p.m. At that meeting, anyone interested in joining NASA or offering a suggestion for the old school's future use may do so.

Life of President Jefferson Davis to be subject of one-man drama
      A one-man play focused on the life of Confederate President Jefferson Davis will be presented at the Washington Little Theater on February 23, 24, and 25. "Unconquerable Heart: The Life of Jefferson Davis" will star film and television actor Dorin L. Seymour in a production that "captures the essence of Jefferson Davis' spirit, dedication, and loyalty," said Libby Foster.

City celebrates Arbor Day
     Washington Mayor Willie E. Burns signs a proclamation declaring February 17 as Arbor Day, a worldwide salute to the value of trees. Washington has been recognized as a Tree City USA, and members of the Washington Tree Board and the Iris Garden Club gathered for the annual proclamation.
