Iris Garden Club hears program by award winners
Shirley Noggle and Norma Pittman presented a most interesting and informative program at the meeting of the Iris Garden Club Tuesday, February 13, at the Parish Hall.
Mrs. Noggle and Mrs. Pittman, members of the Sharon-Raytown Garden Club, spoke on growing chrysanthemums and their club's award winning by-yearly chrysanthemum show. Laura Toburen introduced the program speakers.
Prior to the program Karen Stubbs presided and welcomed members and guests. She thanked the hostesses, Gail Boyd, Jane Bundy, Marcia Campbell and Dot Harris.
The devotional, "Raising the Glory," was read by Mrs. Noggle.
During the business meeting a thank you note from the staff of the Robert Toombs House was read in regard to the donating and planting of a chaste tree on the grounds of the Toombs House State Historic Site. The chaste tree was from River Farm, once owned by George Washington.
A horticultural comment focused on crepe myrtles and how they are frequently and incorrectly "pruned" into fence posts.
In regard to Arbor Day, Laura Toburen reported that Mayor Willie Burns signed a proclamation and trees were planted at the Recreation Center.
Dot Harris read a thank you note from Sherri Denard, Activities Director at Wilkes Health Care Center, for the club's Garden Therapy nursing home project efforts.
It was announced that a gardening book would be given to the Mary Willis Library in memory of member emeritus, Helen Hodgson.
Also announced was the arrival of the new Iris Garden Club Cookbooks and the Camellia Day festivities that will be held at the Augusta Country Club on Wednesday, March 7. Those wishing to attend must pay the fee and register by February 18.
The next meeting is Tuesday, March 13, at the Parish Hall during which time Evelyn Bennett will present the program, "Cooking with Herbs". Hostesses will be Nancy McAvoy, Mary Craven, Annetta Hilliard, Patsy Winn and Oleta McAvoy.
