After keeping it close through most of the first half and coming within just two points at one point, the Washington-Wilkes Tigers fell victim to Manchester in the first round of the Georgia State Class AA basketball playoffs last Saturday night, 62-84. Following an outstanding career of college football at Carson-Newman and Fort Valley State University, former W-W Tiger defensive back Debargia Cofer has a busy spring lined up as he prepares to enter the NFLdraft in April. More ... This week is the last week to sign up for the 2007 season of Little League. Sign-up is at Ashley Park in the upstairs office, Monday through Friday, 3-6:30 p.m. There will be no late fee for this week of sign-ups, just the regular price of $45.00. Tryouts will be Saturday, March 3, beginning at 10:00 a.m. for Minor League baseball and girls softball, ages 9-12, and ending at 12:00 p.m. More ... The W-W Tiger basketball boys B-team finished its season on even money at 6-6 when they beat the Greene County Tigers 38-35 in their home court finale. Four of the season losses were by a total of only 10 points, according to Coach Lazarus Chennault Jr. More ... Tyson Gilland was the top finisher for Washington-Wilkes at the Georgia Class AA state individual wrestling tournament, and two others competed well at the event held February 16-17 at the Gwinnett Arena. At 135 pounds, Gilland advanced to the semifinal round before losing 3-5 to eventual state champion Corey Taylor of Fitzgerald. Gilland's season record was an impressive 52-3 for 2006-2007. More ... The annual Washington-Wilkes Little League Day will be held Saturday, March 24. The day will begin with a parade that will leave from W-WCHS, go across to Depot Street, take a right onto Robert Toombs Avenue, and end at Ashley Park. The parade will start at 10 a.m. and then the opening ceremonies at Ashley Park will begin at 11:30. More ... The Washington-Wilkes Tiger boys and girls tennis teams opened their 2007 season on Tuesday, February 27, with a home match against the Elbert County Blue Devils. More ... The spring soccer program for the Washington-Wilkes Parks and Recreation Department got underway this week with registration beginning February 5. The final deadline for registration is March 2.The fee for the program is $30 for the first child and $25 for the second child. No late sign-ups will be accepted. More ... 1.
