Aggravated child molestation, teen sex abuse lead monthly roundup of Wilkes County arrests
Washington Police have arrested a young Washington man for aggravated child molestation involving a 4-year-old girl.
Dionte Grant, 17, was arrested February 9 and charged with one count of felony aggravated child molestation and one count of felony sexual battery. He is being held at the Wilkes County law enforcement center.
"This case just makes me sick," investigator Lt. Joe Nelson said. Grant, a relative of the child's mother, had no place to sleep, so the child's mother let him stay with them for the night, he said. The mother was out of the house, with Grant caring for the child.
During the night, Nelson said, Grant woke the child to "play" and after a while put his hand in her panties and continued the assault.
The girl told him to stop, and ran and called her mother on a cell phone. Her mother came home, confronted Grant and told him to leave, and called police.
Washington police officers searched the city and caught Grant on Norman Street some four hours later, packed and ready to leave town.
Nelson said that Grant has denied the girl's accusations, but that the girl a is very good witness for her age. The investigation is continuing, he said.
Another sexual assault involving teens occurred February 14 in the gym at the high school/middle school complex. A 17-year-old high school student, Quintario Avontae Smith, of Winton Lane in Washington, was arrested along with a 14- year-old juvenile for following two middle-school girls, ages 12 and 13, into a rest room and trying to get them to perform oral sex on them.
The girls refused and went back to their class. Their teacher saw that the girls were upset, and asked what was wrong, and the girls told the teacher.
Both Smith and the 14-year-old boy were arrested and brought to the police station and questioned with a parent. Charges against the juvenile are unknown at press time.
Smith is charged with one count of child molestation. Both students will also face a tribunal at the school this week to decide if they will be expelled from the school, Principal Andrew Jackson said.
