The Washington-Wilkes Tiger baseball team is off to a good start with some impressive wins to begin their 2007 season. Most recently, the Tigers hammered perennial powerhouse Athens Academy, but earlier, and probably more satisfyingly, beat rival Lincoln County twice in as many games. More ... More sounds of thunder will mark Aonia's place on the motorsports map this weekend as the Wilkes County Young Farmer Truck and Tractor Pull will be held Saturday night at the new facility off Highway 78 at Big Cedar Road. More ... The annual Washington-Wilkes Little League Day will be held Saturday, March 24. The day will begin with a parade that will leave from W-WCHS, go across to Depot Street, take a right onto Robert Toombs Avenue, and end at Ashley Park. The parade will start at 10 a.m. and then the opening ceremonies at Ashley Park will begin at 11:30. More ... New York Giant Gerris Wilkinson, grandson of Washington's Pie Wilkinson, will speak at an assembly at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School March 15 at 11. The 6'4" linebacker was a Georgia Tech standout and was selected in the third round of the 2006 NFL draft. He was All-Academic at Tech and graduated in 2005 with a Bachelors degree in management, and is working on a second degree. More ... The W-W Tiger tennis teams played a full round of matches against Lincoln County on Tuesday, March 6, but complete results had not been reported at press time. Two of the match winners in the contest, however, were boys singles Ryan Lee (left) and girls doubles Rachel Yearwood (above) who played with partner Jessica Murphy. More ... 1.
