DOL will provide summer jobs for young people
      State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond has announced that the Georgia Department of Labor will provide $30,000 for summer jobs for young people ages 14 through 21 in the East Central Georgia area. Wilkes County is included in the program. The grant will help create jobs for 25 young people, including those with disabilities.

Free legal services available April 23 at Senior Center
      Members of the staff of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) will be in Wilkes County Monday, April 23, to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal help, on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone who is a senior citizen, 60 years of age or older, and has a civil (non-criminal) legal issue may be able to receive help.

      The Washington Little Theater Company will hold auditions for the female version of "The Odd Couple," summer production of the theater. The play, which according to Bolton Lunceford, is Neil Simon's funniest play, has parts for six adult women, and two men.

      Anthony M. White of Washington is a new member of the American Angus Association, according to the executive vice president of the national breed registry organization in Saint Joseph, Missouri. The American Angus Association, with more than 34,000 active adult and junior members, is the largest beef cattle registry Association in the world.

      This sweet kitten is one of the kittens and cats at the Washington- Wilkes Animal Shelter. They all need nice warm loving homes. Come and visit. Scratching is important for cats. People think cats scratch to sharpen their claws, but it's the way they shed the old outer sheaths of their nails. Scratching is also a marking way of leaving their scent.

      G rowing Up is a memoir by a Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper columnist. The memoir is a popular genre lately, but not many are as interesting and entertaining as this one by Russell Baker. His beginnings would not seem to be the sort which could produce a successful author.

      Registration is open for the 2007 session of "Dig History," the archaeology summer camp for kids at Hickory Hill in Thomson, Georgia. Strawberry growers expect good crop due to dry, mild conditions
      Tax season is also strawberry season in Georgia, and this year, growers expect a bountiful supply. "It looks to be a great year for strawberries, due to the mild, dry conditions we've had," said Gerard Krewer, a horticulturist with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Most of Georgia affected by drought; northeast conditions called 'moderate'
      Drought conditions have deepened in much of Georgia. The piedmont and mountain regions north of a line from Troup County, on the western border, to Franklin County, in northeast Georgia, are now in moderate drought, as are southeast and south-central Georgia. The rest of the state remains in a mild drought.

4-H Horse Club is working to get arena in good shape
      Several dedicated members of the Wilkes County 4-H Horse Club braved the chilly temperatures and stiff winds on Saturday, April 7, to get the arena in shape for riding this spring. The arena, located behind the McGill-Woodruff Ag Center on the North Bypass, has not been used for horses in several years and is in need of being brought back into shape for safe footing for horses and riders.

      Dr. Les Sales from Wilkes County Veterinary Services spoke to the Wilkes County 4-H Horse Club on Tuesday, April 3, about safety and first aid for the horse and rider. Dr. Sales demonstrated the proper ways to care for wounds and injuries on the trail and around the farm as well as preventive maintenance tips.

I did not get out that early but I understand they all agreed quickly to stay inside the building. Brandon Waller and Tyler Scarborough sang "To God Be the Glory" before Rev.       We enjoyed a nice Easter weekend. It started with church, then to Lincolnton to my parents' home for a family get-together. We ended up with 20 of us which was a nice crowd. Everyone cooked and carried their favorite dishes. Of course, my mother had cooked enough for an army. She just can't seem to "mind" us kids and not prepare so much on Saturday and Sunday.

      We had a very good attendance at Clifford's Grove Baptist Church for Easter services. It's nice when children and grandchildren visit their parents and go to church with them. It is always good to see them. Ansley Braxton sang a special during worship service. The Lord's Supper was observed. The covered dish meal in the fellowship hall was enjoyed by all.

Felicia Echols said she was operating a front-end loader moving wood chips when the loader caught fire. "I got off really quick," she said. "Everybody was hollering at me to jump.

      Registration for this year's Summer Drama Camp at the Washington Little Theater has already begun. Instead of the usual two-week camp, this year's camp will be three weeks. As always, all students completing kindergarten through the twelfth grade are invited to attend.
