Sub-region champ Tigers start tourney for 2007 Region 8-AA championship

Tyrekus Bowman earns All-American honors at Augusta State Univ.
      Augusta State's Tyrekus "AJ" Bowman, a former W-W Tiger standout, has been named an NABC All-American, according to a recent announcement from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The honor is the second major award for Bowman in recent weeks.

Buc cindermen win at region, qualify for state meet
     Members of the Briarwood Academy Track Team will be participating in the state track meet to be held in Albany April 26-28. The region track meet was held Thursday, April 19, at Gatewood School in Eatonton. The Briarwood Bucs placed first and the Lady Bucs placed second. Wilkes County members of the varsity team are freshman Anna Goolsby; sophomore Chase Walker; seniors Joseph Batrous and Olivia Lyons; freshman Lizzie Keen; and eighth grader Emily Henderson.

4 Wilkes players win in 2 divisions of spring tourney
      Participating in the Spring Fling Baseball Tournament in Anderson, S.C., last week, Zach Murray and D.J. Barnett played with the Georgia Crush to win the 14U division with a 4-0 record. The Georgia Crush is a travelling team consisting of players from Wilkes County, Elbert County, Franklin County, and Stephens County.

McCormick Lions will host golf tourney at Hickory Knob park
      The McCormick County Lions Club, McCormick, S.C., will hold its annual golf tournament on Wednesday, May 2, at Hickory Knob State Park. The format will be Captain's Choice/Shotgun Start at 1:30 p.m. with lots of tournament and raffle prizes for red, white, and gold tee players. The $50 per person entry fee includes drinks and a steak cookout at the Barn following play.

      Danny Verdun-Wheeler, senior linebacker for the Georgia Bulldogs and NFLdraft hopeful, visited Washington-Wilkes Middle School and Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School and spoke to several groups of students about the importance of education.

Tiger win, N. Oconee loss put W-W in first spot
      It was do or die for the Washington Wilkes Tigers last Friday as they took the field for the last region game of the regular season. Stuck in a three-way tie for first place in the sub-region, the Tigers had to win their game and hope North Oconee lost to Oglethorpe.

Recognized for outstanding play
     Ali Dyson, daughter of George and April Dyson, has received several basketball awards including the Most Valuable Defensive Player award and the Coach's Award for the Briarwood Academy Lady Bucs. The Augusta Chronicle named her in its honorable mention list for All- Area Independent School basketball players.
