MOTHERS

"Most of all the other beautiful things in life come by twos and threes, by dozens and hundreds. Plenty of roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers and sisters, aunts and cousins, but only one mother in the whole world." - Kate Douglas Wiggin.

"She looketh well to the ways of her household." - Proverbs 31:27.

"A mother is the best friend anyone ever has." - Author unknown.

"There never was a great man who had not a great mother." - Oliver Schrienier.

"For if my father was the head of our house, my mother was its heart." - Phillip Dunne.

"Of all the flavors one eats, salt is indispensable; wherever one goes in the world, one's mother is dearest." - Chinese Proverb.

All of that was written to remind everyone, if your mother is living, call her, write her, visit her, just remember her - the one who has guided your life so unselfishly - on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13. Our warmest regards to all those who have raised families and those who are just now experiencing the duties of building a family.

Our deepest heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family of Pauline Teems Parker of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. The death of Pauline was a very special loss for her sister, Gertrude Long, and brother, Hugh Teems. Our heart goes out to Gertrude and Hugh at this sad time. ..Mary Will Denard attended the funeral of her uncle, Alex Bradley, in Thomson on Friday. He was also the uncle of Sam Bradley and the husband of the late Frances Whitener Bradley. Our sympathy goes out to Mary Will, Sam, and other members of the Bradley family. ..Carolyn Gammon joined Debbie Lindsey and Pauline Bell and met Janet Hill of Alamo and Nancy Hayes of Winder for lunch in Athens last Wednesday. This was a retired teacher reunion for the five ladies. Janet was the media specialist at Washington- Wilkes Primary School for many years and Nancy taught the second grade for many years in the same school. Many of you may remember her husband, Alison Hayes, who was the former band director of Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School. The ladies found they all had one problem in common - loss of memory. ..We were saddened to learn of the death of Gary Chamberlain of the Jackson Crossroads community. During this difficult time we extend our deepest sympathy to the family. ..Our heart is broken. Our precious Beth - only 45 years old - passed away on Thursday afternoon and was buried Sunday. As with all of those who have recently lost loved ones, our Beth will long be remembered for her happy smile, and most especially her loving heart. With that said, sympathy is extended to the family of Beth Flanigan Keener of Lincolnton. ..After the Virginia Tech massacre, parents of college students everywhere called their daughters and sons for hours after the incident. The parents said their first instinct was to call their daughter or son just to hear their voice. ..As usual, the Kentucky Derby was interesting to watch. It made you want to put on your finest hat and sip a mint julep! Street Sense, ridden by Borel, was the winner of the roses - and the roses were beautiful. We were pulling for Curlin, Hard Spun, Stormello, Scat Daddy, and Storm in May. Imawildandcrazyguy had to be a Steve Martin horse. ..We understand Sue Bufford has recently had surgery and we wish her a speedy recovery. ..On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Maney traveled to Hayesville, N.C., for the funeral of Mr. Maney's cousin, Evelyn Groves. Our sympathy is extended to the Groves family. On Monday, the Maneys will travel to Jonesboro to be with the family of their daughter, Ruth's mother-in-law, Jan Strickland, who is gravely ill. Our prayers go out for the Strickland family.
