2007-05-10 / Sports

MLB umpire Marvin Hudson (right), Major League Baseball umpire from Washington, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, May 8, where he discussed the purposes and operation of "Blue for Kids, Inc.," an organization he founded about three years ago. Blue for Kids is sponsored by eight major league umpires as well as a number of minor league umpires. The organization makes major and minor league baseball tickets available to deserving children, giving them an opportunity to see a baseball game and to meet umpires and players. The group also sponsors visit events at hospitals where they provide stuffed toy animals (bears, puppies, and kittens), baseball t-shirts (and "Hugs are Free" t-shirts) and baseball caps. Marvin described the reaction of both children and parents when these visits are made. To learn more about "Blue for Kids, Inc.," go to www.blueforkids.com. Chris Hughes was the program host for the day.
