Sisson, Amis get Rotary Club's top awards
      At the annual Washington Rotary Club's Awards Night and End-of- Year Party, Wilkes County's Chief Deputy Mike Sisson was awarded the prestigious Community Service Award and Billy Amis was named Rotarian of the Year.

      Members of a Rotary International Group Study Exchange team from Jamaica visited the Washington Rotary Club this month and also toured other communities and cities in the area and around the state.

Band auxiliaries to hold tryouts for fall season
      The Tiger Marching Band Auxiliaries will again have tryouts for colorguard and majorette for the 2007-2008 season. The tryouts will be held Thursday, May 31, and Friday, June 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School Band Room.

Moss tells of rehabilitation work
      The Reverend Dr. Denni Moss, new rector at The Church of the Mediator in Washington, was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, May 29. Moss told members about her background and career, explaining that her work in drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs had changed her life.

Vacation Reading Program starts with birds of prey show at Library
      The Mary Willis Library Vacation Reading Program got off to a good start Saturday, May 19, with a Bird of Prey show presented by Winged Ambassadors of Newnan. About 80 people came to the library throughout the day. Refreshments were enjoyed after the show by all in attendance.

      Wills Memorial staff members Kim Gunby, OTR/L, (left) and Margaret Rae Evans, COPD/L, were the featured speakers at last Thursday's Wills Memorial Hospital Tea and Learn in the hospital cafeteria. The therapists presented a program on occupational therapy and how treatments are used to help people achieve independence in their daily lives.

Diabetic support group meets at hospital cafe Thursday, June 14 at 2
      The Diabetic Support Group will meet in the Wills Memorial Hospital Library on Thursday, June 14, at 2 p.m. The focus of this meeting will be diabetic eye care. There will be time for discussion at the end of the meeting. Anne R. Myers, RN, MSN, will be available for individual consultations scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays at the hospital.

No change in CSRA rate of unemployment, Ga. rate is up to 4.1 percent
      The Georgia Department of Labor has reported that the unemployment rate in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) was unchanged at 5.1 percent from March to April. Meanwhile, the state's unemployment rate increased to 4.1 percent in April, up one-tenth of one percent from 4.0 percent in March. The state's April rate was two-tenths of one percent lower than the U.S.

Wilkes Senior Center sets Yard Sale for June 21 and 22
      The Wilkes County Senior Center, 108 Marshall Street, Washington, will have a yard sale on June 21 and 22. Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase bingo prizes and for other projects at the center. Anyone wishing to donate items for the sale may leave them at the center.

Fountain Campground kicks off annual campmeeting Saturday
      The annual Campmeeting at Fountain Campground will kick off with a BBQ chicken supper and Gospel Sing on Saturday, June 2. The BBQ chicken supper will be served from 5-6:30 p.m. and will include a BBQ chicken half, homemade potato salad, green beans, bread, tea and a choice of homemade cake.

Commissioner Donna Hardy honored for certified commissioners program
      Donna Hardy, Wilkes County Commissioner, was honored at an awards ceremony in Savannah for completing the nationally recognized Certified Commissioners Advanced Program. Dr. Steve Wrigley, Director-Designee of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia, distributed the certificates to the 11 program graduates.

      I hope you all had a nice Memorial Day holiday. I should have mentioned in last week's paper how much I appreciate and love our veterans, whether it be in one of the World Wars, the Korean Conflict,the Vietnam War (when I was in high school in the 1960s), or the war in Iraq. We all know someone who did not come home from those wars.

      I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend. Although several members were sick and not able to be out, we missed them at church. Rev. and Mrs. Martin were feeling better and he preached a good message from Acts 4:5-13. We sang several patriotic songs and Karmen Moon sang "God Bless America." Tyrone News
      Love Willis, 90, of the Tyrone community passed away Sunday, May 20, in the MCG medical center in Augusta. He was always well respected by all who knew him. He was a carpenter and worked for the late Irvin Hardy when our brick house was built across the road from the Maxwell homeplace in the early 1960s. The color brick used was the first in our area.
