Daddy's Shoes
      A young boy came from a poor family. His father was a mechanic and barely made enough to feed them. He wanted to be popular in school and keep his image up around the girls and his peers. So, it was the going thing to wear penny loafers. I think one of my brothers had a pair and someone stole the pennies out of them to buy some cookies. A penny went a long ways back then.

      Ward Just is a leading American writer, having published over 17 books. The American Ambassador was published in 1987 and is still relevant. The title character, William North, is a career Foreign Service officer, about to be charge d'affairs in Bonn, Germany. The time is the early 1980s, though references are made to North's earlier experiences.

      Former President Jimmy Carter called President George W. Bush's international relations "the worst in history" and Bush fired back calling Carter "increasingly irrelevant." Former presidents historically don't talk about sitting presidents and Carter has been criticized for speaking out.
