W-WCHS students 'above average' in Ga. high school graduation tests
Results from the recent Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) show that Washington- Wilkes Comprehensive High School students were above the average for all other schools in this Regional Educational Service Area (RESA), as well as being at or above the average for other schools in the state of Georgia, Principal Andrew Jackson said.
The school recently received the results of the graduation tests administered across the state during the week of March 26. High school juniors take tests in the academic areas of math, science, social studies, and English/Language Arts. They also take a writing test that is given in the fall. In order to graduate, students must pass all parts of the GHSGT (have a scaled score of 500 or higher), as well as meet all course requirements for graduation.
"Juniors at W-WCHS, our Class of 2008, did an outstanding job on these tests. WWCHS students were above the average for all other schools in our Regional Educational Service Area (RESA), as well as being at or above the average for other schools in the State of Georgia."
The accompanying chart (below) shows a comparison of percentages of students at WWCHS who passed the tests on their first attempt compared to the average for other schools in our RESA and the state.
One W-WCHS junior scored far above average for the state. Troy Colvard made perfect scores on the English/Language Arts and Mathematics part of the GHSGT.
"Congratulations to all W-WCHS juniors who passed the GHSGT on their first attempt," Jackson said. "Also, congratulations are in order to the faculty and staff of W-WCHS for the great job they did in preparing our Tigers!"
Those students who did not pass a specific content area test(s) will have four more attempts at it before graduation. The faculty at W-WCHS offers remediation workshops for those students before each of the retake opportunities. The first of those remediation sessions will be held this summer beginning July 9 on the W-WCHS campus.
Administration of retakes for the GHSGT begin with the writing test on July 11 followed by Math on July 18, English/Language Arts on July 18, Social Studies on July 19, and Science on July 20. All tests begin at 8 a.m.
