James E. Sherrer honored for years of volunteer work with senior adults

Sherrer of Washington- Wilkes has been recognized for his many years of volunteer work for senior adults.

At the annual CSRA Area Agency on Aging recognition luncheon, Sherrer was honored as the 2007 volunteer of the year for the 14- county area. The luncheon was held at the Julian Smith Casino in Augusta.

The celebration opened with a welcome from Andy Crosson, Executive Director of the Regional Development Center. After entertainment, including a comedy routine by Heartha Piercy, who is Ms. Senior Georgia-Carolina 2007, music by Ms. Senior Augusta Maudy Lysse, and lunch, Sherrer's award and others were announced.

Sherrer's long list of service activities was reviewed by Lauren Spivey, Elder Rights Manager for the Area Agency on Aging. Beginning with a few terms on the Wilkes County Nutrition Board some 15 years ago, Sherrer also served on the advisory council for both the Area Agency on Aging and the Coalition of Advocates for aging through their offices in Augusta.

He served a term as a Silver Haired Legislator. He was a charter member of Washington Area Faith in Action which he saw through incorporation and continues to serve on its executive committee.

He is involved in weekly programs at Washington Manor where for about 10 years he has visited and offered inspirational services, making over 5,000 personal contacts. One of his first personal local contributions was as a seasonal and talented Santa Claus which role has spanned over 15 years.

Photography has been one of his hobbies. He photographs and gives away pictures of seniors and others almost everywhere he goes. Mr. Sherrer says that he came to Wilkes County "by choice" as the first manager of the new Bi-Lo store here "back in 1977."

In closing remarks, Jeanette Cummings, Director, Area Agency on Aging, commended and thanked all award recipients and all caregivers among an audience of more than 100 which included a number from Wilkes County and several government figures.
